Wish EU were here Pampered pen-pushers posted to paradise resorts TOP JOB: In Mauritius By Jamie Lyons, Deputy Political Editor, 29/08/2010
BRUSSELS is sending an army of EU pen-pushers to dream postings in paradise resorts like BARBADOS, and showering them with perks.
Dozens will act as diplomats and be paid more than David Cameron to boost the EU's profile on the world stage.
Pampered staff will also trouser bumper expenses for chauffeurs, homes and their kids.
The EU is setting up its new diplomatic corps, the European External Action Service, as hard-up families all over Europe are struggling to pay their bills.
It will have 7,000 staff and a budget of £8BILLION to establish embassies across the world.
And new documents reveal exactly where the diplomats are heading. A team of 42 will be stationed in Barbados, another 20 in Mauritius, 20 in Fiji and 17 in tropical Cape Verde.
Seven are off to the Solomon Islands and 80 to 90 will be sent to America. At least 50 senior officials will earn between £157,000 and £171,000 a year - more than the PM's annual wage of £142,500.
All staff will benefit from the famously generous EU expenses.
Senior staff will collect allowances for drivers, entertainment and their kids' school fees, as well as daily subsistence and household payments.
On top of that is the ex-pat allowance of 16 per cent of salary, two months' wages for "installation" and another two months' money for "resettlement". If they can tear themselves away, there are up to 30 days holiday a year too.
The corps will be headed up by Britain's Baroness Cathy Ashton, who gets £230,702 a year - making her the best-paid female politician in the western world.
She controls a budget three times that of our Foreign Office.
Last night Sian Herbert, of campaign group Open Europe, said: "In these tough times, taxpayers' money could be better spent than on lavish perks for EU diplomats in exotic destinations."

I shouldn't think they use pens much these days.
Also, most people (right handed people) are more pen draggers than pushers.
Sorry - it might have been a really good piece, but I could not get past the mindless use of a, inaccurate cliche in the first sentence.

I'm not bothered.
But it was a lazily-written piece, you've got to admit that.
Lazy writing = lazy thinking.
(And - they're not getting paid more than David Cameron. They might be getting more than the Prime Minister, but not more than Cameron. More laziness.)

More to the point; if, as they are always claiming, the EU is a collection of independent states, each operating under the principle of subsidiarity, why the hell are we, the taxpayers of the EU, having to fund this new legion of so called "diplomats? Each of these destinations will have diplomatic representation from each of the member states already.
What mugs we are to to continue propping up this corrupt construct.

No, the piece said they are paid more than David Cameron. They are not. They are paid more than the Prime Minister. Just another sloppy phrase in a sloppy piece.
