VINDICATION’: Ex-Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens was indicted yesterday and charged with lying to Congress in 2008 about steroids. The famous pitcher Roger Clemens could face up to 30 years in prison for alledgedly lying about his involvement with steroids, during his baseball career. Guilty or not only presidents like Bill Clinton can get away unpunished for lying to Congress..news.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/20100820roger_clemens_gets_heat_from_red_sox_fans/srvc=home&position=also QUOTE: Roger Clemens gets heat from Red Sox fans By Dave Wedge and Colneth Smiley Jr. Friday, August 20, 2010 Fenway Faithfuls blasted “The Rocket” over his federal perjury rap while U.S. Rep. Stephen F. Lynch said he was “not surprised” once-beloved flamethrower Roger Clemens was charged with lying to Congress about steroids. Lynch, a South Boston Democrat, sat through Clemens’ infamous 2008 testimony as a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and called the charges “very serious.” “There were glaring inconsistencies between Mr. Clemens’ testimony and the testimony of other witnesses who had personal knowledge of all the matters involved,” Lynch told the Herald. “There are irreconcilable facts that someone is not being truthful.” The seven-time Cy Young Award winner - who’s tied with Young for the most wins in Red Sox [team stats] history - faces up to 30 years in jail if convicted.“Let me be clear. I have never taken steroids or HGH (human growth hormone),” Clemens testified on Feb. 13, 2008.

The 30 years will be the maximum sentence, and that would only be given if the lie had very serious consequences.
Cheating at sport is bad. In the case of baseball, it is of course unforgivable; much depends on the outcome of matches! ;D
But what I loved about the Americans was the way they seemed to shrug their shoulders over the Clinton thing and say in effect "oh, what does it matter? There are more important things to concern us."

Quite a lot of people other than Presidents have lied to Congress and Bill Clinton wasn't even the first President to tell porkies to the people.
Basically, this 'sentence' is ridiculous. If the guy had raped or murdered someone he'd have got a lesser sentence.
Justice and the law are NOT the same thing at all!
(And by now most members here know that Clinton is one of the Presidents I hate MORE than most!)

30 years is the max. I'll be surprised if Clemens receives much more than a wrist slap.

There's a bloke in the US who got 35 years for spitting at a policeman.
Now, spitting's not nice: but 35 years' worth of not nice?

Unless I'm seriously off the mark (it happens, but not that often), that sort of thing won't apply here. American icons generally do not share the same fate as the little guys. Of course, there are exceptions that make the rules ... good example - the Pete Rose fiasco. I still have trouble believing the way that turned out. He was a freakin' sport god .. yet, they let him fall.

Quite a number of baseball players have admitted to using steroids and have had no trouble with the law. Only the players who denied and still deny steroid use such as Roger Clemens and all time home run leader Barry Bonds are facing criminal charges!
