I was just reading an article on this on MSNBC. It was really fascinating. They have learned so much studying everything that has happened since. How plants and animals have rebounded.....how long it took....etc.
Since spring was late it helped because a lot of migratory stuff hadn't taken place so luckily many species weren't wiped out.
I just can't believe it has been 30 years!! It does seem like a long time ago.....but 30 years!! Wow.
Some of the stories were so sad......some of the old timers in the area that refused to leave before the eruption......I guess they just didn't believe the eruption would be that enormous, or how fast it was going to move down the mountain.

I visited friends, a decade ago, in Richland, Washington and one of my aunts lived nearby. You still see all this white powder on the ground that Mt. Helena sent out. I'm sure someone with a good eye can still see it today!

I happened to be on a flight to Seattle from Houston a week or ten days prior to the big eruption. It was a clear day and the pilot pointed out the smoldering mountain which wasn't far away and was very visible. We knew an eruption was likely but we had no idea how severe it would be.
A good friend living in Spokane told us about the incredible ash coverage they encountered.
