But really - if we can all forsee that their crass selfserving behaviour is going to mean misery for millions, why not work out a way to make them not cause so much harm?

Marx and Engels already did that, it didn't catch on. Why not go with Proudhon..........? Anarchists drink herbal tea because proper tea is theft

you will balance the books a damned sight easier with oil flowing than you will without it..plus the investment as been heavey so we need some return ..the falklands is not an ""extra"" you dont balance books by throwing money away which is what labour of course has been doing ...you balance books by getting rid of dead wood and extras..when you cannot aford a loaf you dont buy chocolates.....what you buy is flour and yeast A poor analogy though mouse. A Government and Country are far more complex than that. Rememeber the Country is actually both sides of the balance sheet. Saving money in one area will cost us money in another. Perhaps more. Making peeople unemployed will not only cost us money, but will cause further unemployment. Cutting 'waste' will mean thousands more on the dole, not just as a direct result, but via knock on effects.

we are a minor contributor to the IMF so our modest support is in that way
so no money changes hands unless the world melts, in which case we probably have other things to worry about

Too bad Napoleon I didn't win the war against England. The food in England would now be good. French is such a much more romantic sounding language than English. There wouldn't be an EU because Napoleon would have adopted his currency (needless to say, with his picture). The super powers would be France and the US. The map of France would include present day Germany, the Balkans, Scandinavia, Russia, and manchuria. Hitler wouldn't have ever emerged.

Riotgrrl - The Balkans would be part of France because Napoleon would have conquered them. Mouse - Napoleon's big mistake was indeed, attacking Russia in the winter. Same as Hitler. For a great read I suggest August Fournier's biography of Napoleon I. It was published in 1903 but is still vibrant and relevant today. It reads like a great book of fiction. Best of all, it's in the public domain which means you can read it for free on books.google.com. Here is a link: books.google.com/books?id=hgQRAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=napoleon&lr=&as_brr=4&cd=21#v=onepage&q&f=falseThose of us who read a lot tend to go for recently pubished books. This one is more than one hundred years old but very readable. I enjoyed it greatly. Here is another suggestion for history buffs. Keep Wikipedia open on your computer while reading. When a place or a person enters the story you can quickly obtain more information that way.

Riotgrrl - The Balkans would be part of France . So all the other places conquered by Napolean are now part of France? Not a huge Napolean buff, but I don't think he wanted the Balkans. Rather he wanted the Ottomans to join with him against Russia.

Riotgrrl: So all the other places conquered by Napolean are now part of France? Napoleon conquered Italy Spain Austria, what is now Germany, Poland, Holland, Belgium, much of Egypt, and a few other places. He had the best army and he was personally the most brilliant field commander or General. He lost in the end for two main reasons: 1/Invading Russia was his biggest mistake. He underestimated the resilience of the people and the deadly cold of winter. The Russians burned their towns as the French army approached to deny Napoleon the spoils of war; and 2/The brilliance of his army leadership was counterbalanced by the incompetence of his naval leadership. Lord Nelson trounced them badly at Trafalgar. But more importantly, they didn't have the landing craft to move their army to England. Had they been able to get across the channel they would have quickly conquered England and Trafalgar wouldn't have ever happened. If you're interested further, download the book cited above. It's a great read. jade They do have nice food in French speaking Canada. The scenery and outdoors are gorgeous in the summer time. Vancouver is one of my favorite cities in the word. But snow and ice are on my 'no-no' list. If it snows there then I definitely do not want to live there. Places where it snows are worth considering for summer vacations but that's the extent of it.

So, none of the places he conquered are now actually part of France.
Yet if he'd conquered the Balkans, they would be?

No. Since he lost the war in the end France kept none of his conquered territory.
