chocolatePeople who regularly eat chocolate are more depressive, experts have found.Research in Archives of Internal Medicine shows those who eat at least a bar every week are more glum than those who only eat chocolate now and again. Many believe chocolate has the power to lift mood, and the US team say this may be true, although scientific proof for this is lacking. But they say they cannot rule out that chocolate may be a cause rather than the cure for being depressed.Confession: I have never smoked cigarettes or taken any illegal drugs (never been tempted) and although I drink alcohol it is occasional and I can take it or leave it. But I have an awful job resisting chocolate. As a youngster I was a serial Mars bar eater and although I have periods when I don't touch chocolate, if I weaken and have the tiniest bit I'm off again....I cannot just have a little bit. So I guess I am similar to an alcoholic - all or nothing. I was interested in this study (although it is not statistically that big) because I've noticed that if I am really busy and engaged in work etc. I never give chocolate a thought. But if I am bored or 'down' - that's when I reach for the ultimate comfort food. But whether it lifts my mood or adds to it, I don't know...... Are there any fellow chocoholics here? Or if not a chocoholic, what is your 'addiction'?

i love chocolate...when younger didnt indulge a great deal but as i grew older my liking for it grew..how ever now i can only indulge in the more expensive chocs[less fat] so am either bought or buy my self a large box from choc hotel every 6 weeks and indulge my self with an allowence of three chocs per evening[very restrained]for as long as the box lasts..can usually make a large box last a week...which reminds me i must order one ..the piped selection being my fav i used to enjoy my daily whiskeys..guiness or largars..but just have an ocasional bailys these days and very very rare wine when out for a meal i still smoke but have cut down from 40 a day to a mere 5-7 i have taken ilegal drugs in the past when young and stupid...but am very against ilegal drugs so they are not some thing which i have any dealings with
all in all am very restrained and pure these days

;D Jean
Not sure if you are referring to their artificiality or the toffee, nougat and caramel mix.
I forebode to mention that I later switched to a much wider range of chocoholism (a red line under that word tells me it is not a proper word, but it is in my vocabulary) :- Must be 30 years since I had a Mars bar. I was commuting back and forth to Brussels for a while and no commute was complete without a sortie into the duty free for Belgian goodies.
So Jean - what's your vice then? Or are you perfect in every way? I do hope not. Perfection (except in nature) is boring. And you are not boring.

So Jean - what's your vice then? I was being a chocolate snob, firedancer - my vice is about 75% cocoa solids minimum. And the great thing is, you need a lot less of it to get your fix! (The last time you and I locked horns on WoM, I forebore to mention something, didn't I?)

I eat chocolate every day. I buy the dark chocolate with 70% cocoa content. Although it is a high-fat food, it is packed with anti-oxidants. I did it in green tea mixed with frothy soy milk..it is really delicious like that

[ Ah, so it was the artificiality (in a way) you meant. The whole point of having a vice Jean is that it is bad for you. Dark chocolate is good for you - it's cardio-protective. Well, as long as you don't eat so much that you become obese of course. And you're right, you need less of it to get your fix. Trouble is I don't like dark chocolate Now come on.... I posted my Duh 7 minutes before your gracious correction Memo to self - check for typos before you post. Lock horns? Tut - we are not rutting stags are we? I always bow to your erudition - it was merely a sidestep on my part.

My fave wwas abox from Terrys of all darks with hard centres - Pyramid I think they were called
That was ages ago before I discovered high cocoa contents

I have to go with the high cocoa content. Best of all, home made fudge and Texas sheet cake using powdered cocoa instead of chocolate or chocolate chips. Next best - the hot fudge sauce Dairy Queen and our local ice cream shop uses for their sundaes. Truthfully, I never eat that because it's too good. I either have to not eat it at all or stop and pick one up every few days.

It's said that women love chocolate in a different way than men do so I suppose it's no surprise that the answers have all been from women so far! I.... oh I just love chocolate. There's no use trying to pretend otherwise. Cheffy, I think that European chocolate is far, far nicer than American chocolate in general. I don't know why America doesn't do great chocolate - apart from their Reese's Cups and Peanut Butter M&Ms which are shamefully delicious - guilty pleasure. Lindt Lindor is gorgeous! Here's another good choice -- for truffles: www.leonidas-chocolate.com/ Leonidas. Always a good present and nicer than all its competitors by far.
