Good neighbours tidy up their village... then get a ticking off from the council By Andrew Levy Last updated at 10:20 AM on 25th February 2010 They thought they were being helpful by collecting litter around their village. But despite leaving the pavements and verges spotless not everyone was pleased with their efforts. For it seems the volunteers of North Stifford, Essex, who filled 43 bags of rubbish during three hours of hard work, turned out to be a little too good at their job for the likes of the local council. Now the litter pickers have received a reprimand suggesting that the results of their labours were 'excessive'. Enlarge Members of the North Stifford Community Group were shocked to receive an email from their council complaining about the amount of rubbish they had collected The sniffy email was issued by Thurrock council after a three-man dustbin crew sent to collect the rubbish was unable to carry on with their usual round because their vehicle was full. The complaint was all the more surprising as the council had approved the operation and provided the bin bags and litterpicking sticks. Ashley Cobett, the council's cleansing manager, wrote: 'Please bear in mind that the weekend team have their regular work to do borough-wide and 43 bags and a sofa are a little excessive to collect. 'As this had filled up one of the vans they were unable to complete all of their work that day. "the results of their labours were 'excessive'"
I would ask that they consider cleaning up Tooting, our council certainly won't.

As for the council not doing its job properly...once I worked in the press office of a local authority and had to deal with a complaint that the council had waited three whole days to remove a dumped car! When I told the reporter that the council had an average of 400 abandoned cars per week to dispose of the reporter went a bit quiet.

My neighbour cleans litter from our local woodland park every morning when she walks the dog. One day we met a man checking the playground equipment who says that the council employs someone to clear litter from the playgrounds, who had wondered why the place was always so tidy, with the bins full!
The culprits seem to be children on their way to school, but a woman was apparently spotted parking outside, walking into the woods with carrier bags full of party rubbish and leaving it. Bags full of similar rubbish were there the next week. Had I seen her I'd have taken her car number if I could!
