www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,584057,00.html QUOTE: Two Massachusetts Teens Suspended in Cyber Bullying Suicide Case Wednesday, January 27, 2010 Two Mass. high school students have been suspended following the suicide of a teen girl who was allegedly bullied at school and online, the BostonHerald.com reported. Friends and school officials told MyFoxBoston.com that Phoebe Prince, 15, had been picked on since moving to Massachusetts from Ireland last fall. School bullies reportedly taunted the teen through text messages, Facebook and other social networking sites. South Hadley High School superintendent Gus Sayer said there have been students "disciplined already in connection with the incident," BostonHerald.com reported. "There’s still an investigation going on, which may lead to disciplinary action against other students," said Sayer. South Hadley High Principal Daniel Smith sent out a letter to parents of students at the high school. In the letter, he called Prince "smart, charming, and as is the case with many teenagers, complicated ... We will never know the specific reasons why she chose to take her life," Boston.com reported. Smith said the bullying often surrounded arguments about teen dating, Boston.com reported. In the letter to parents, dated Jan. 20, Smith addressed the disagreements: "These disagreements centered on relationship/dating issues. School personnel immediately intervened ... and both counseled and provided consequences as the situations required. It is what happened after those incidents were over that is cause for significant concern.’’ Even after her death, bullies posted disparaging messages on her Facebook memorial page. The comments had to be removed from the page. Local police and the Northwestern District Attorney are investigating. First Assistant District Attorney would not comment on whether any criminal charges would be brought against any students, the paper reported. Click here for more from the Boston Herald.

I had not heard about this case, but am saddened now that I know. How awful it must have been for this young girl to be so mistreated after leaving her birth country.
Bullying is something that has probably gone on since the beginning of time. Does anyone think it is worse today than a generation ago? Does anyone know what happened in the initial case that occurred a couple of years ago? I believe a girl's mother was involved in bullying in the case I am speaking of.

Agree that teenage bullying is common and detestable. No excuse for picking on a young girl like this. So sad.

You're probably referring to the suicide of 13 year old Megan Meier, who was cruelly cyberbullied on a chat forum. We have a thread on that tragic case here. Apparently the bully got away too! biglinmarshall.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=crimenews&thread=477&page=1
Cyberbullying is a problem in Europe too. It's an outrage that cyberbullies feel free to incite people to commit suicide! biglinmarshall.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=newsforum&thread=230&page=1

Thanks, Anna. That is exactly the case I was talking about. As far as cyberbullying in Europe, I suppose there are rotten people everywhere. It is rewarding when one hears about something good a person does because the news seems to be filled with all kinds of negatives.
Glad that you agree, BushAdmirer. By the way...I love your handle!

This video about Phoebe Prince's suffering in PC infested Massachsetts really angers me. Apparently she was bullied because she was attractive and others were jealous.
The Massachusetts school system is very pro tolerance for minority groups and i suspect the inevitable negativity that young people grow up with is now starting to be chaneled towards people, who seem to represent a mainstream ideal.

Two students responsible for the cyber bullying of 15 year old Phoebe Prince have been suspended and may face criminal charges!www.thebostonchannel.com/education/22653526/detail.html QUOTE: SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Hundreds of parents met in South Hadley on Tuesday night as an anti-bullying task force mobilized weeks after a case of bullying so extreme it drove a 15-year-old girl to end her life. Phoebe Prince, a freshman at South Hadley High School, died Jan. 14., and two students accused of bullying the 15-year-old have been expelled. A police investigation could also lead to criminal charges. "These students' lives have also been dramatically altered, and they won't be graduating from South Hadley High School," Smith said of the students who were expelled. Prince is thought to have committed suicide after allegedly enduring abuse online and in school from female classmates who were upset that Prince, 15, a sophomore who had recently moved to the U.S. from Ireland, was dating a senior football player. While there are some in South Hadley who were also calling for the resignation of the high school Principal Daniel T. Smith and the Superintendent Gus A. Sayer, the prevailing mood in town is that its time to move on to make something positive out of something very tragic. There was standing room only at the first anti-bullying task force meeting at South Hadley High School. "We need to make something positive out of this and to start now. Tonight is the first step," said Al Tower, of South Hadley. Those calling for the resignation of the high school principal are in a distinct minority. "It shouldn't take the death of this girl to wake up people to this problem, and so I think you need a new superintendent," said Dan Czitrom, a South Hadley parent. Smith was moved to tears by an overwhelming show of support. Breaking up into smaller groups, some parents said the task force is long overdue. Nichole Myslinski dropped out because of bullying a month before Prince's death. "I felt so bad for her (Prince). If I would have stayed here, it would have happened to me, too. Girls here are just so cruel," Myslinski said. Next comes the hard work to take the anger, hurt and frustration and turn it into a long-range effort to change student behavior in school and beyond. The bullying task force will meet weekly through the remainder of the school year. The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and South Hadley police were continuing to investigate the Prince case.

The 3 charged with bullying Phoebe as expected claim innocence.edition.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/04/06/massachusetts.bullying.suicide/index.html QUOTE: (CNN) -- Three teens accused in the bullying of a Massachusetts high school student who committed suicide pleaded not guilty to related charges Tuesday. Sean Mulveyhill, 17, Kayla Narey, 17, and Austin Renaud, 18, were not present at Hampshire Superior Court in Northampton, Massachusetts, and entered their pleas through their lawyers. Three other teens also have been charged in what a prosecutor described as a months-long campaign of bullying that led to the suicide in January of Phoebe Prince.

Anna, your last story is confusing. It says that the bullying was carried out by a bou and two girls, yet a girl and two boys have been indicted, one of them with nothing more serious than stutory rape (in the UK, the law turns a blind eye to two 15 year olds having voluntary sex).
Leaving that aside, does anyone think that the school's intervention could have made things worse? Although the headlines scream about "cyber bullying", the girl suffered face-to-face insults as well, which are probably worse because there is no escape.

Another 3 girls are being chaged with stalking and bodily injury in this case. According to one news report a total of 9 teens may face charges, but this is unconfirmed at the moment. The latest: www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1245227&srvc=rss

Bullying has always gone on, and goes on everywhere.
The neice of a friend got bullied in Spain when - as the newbie and English to boot - she began going out with a much fancied boy. Slogans were painted on the walls of her parents' house.
Most teenagers have a cirlce of friends who can see them through this sort of thing. I suppose that is why cyber bullying is so effective; someone is quite isolated when on line.

With one exception all those accused of bullying Phoebe Prince, who committed suicide, have apologized for their actions.

Very sad news. I only wish these people had empathy instead of being eaten up with malice.

Phoebe Prince's bullies made plea deals with the prosecution to avoid jail time.
