Europe has great markets with independent vendors. We don't see that here in the USA except in limited instances (mainly vegetable produce roadside vendors in the summer).
Here is a video of one such market in Spain. You'll have to visit a lot of markets before you encounter one like this. Spontaneous singing is not uncommon in Spanish markets. What a treat if you happen to be shopping there when this happens.

That was lovely, das. The tourists looked surprised but appreciative. Amazing vocal talent for a humble marketplace. Thanks for posting the vid.

I love markets and I go to as many as I can. You get variety, usually they're cheaper and the thrill of the hunt is wonderful.
The market at Ventimiglia on the French/Italian Riviera border used to be brilliant but it's not quite as good as it was a few years ago.
I'm still planning to go to Bury market which is apparently the biggest in England and only about an hour's drive from where we live!

I'm still planning to go to Bury market which is apparently the biggest in England and only about an hour's drive from where we live! about an hour or so from where i live too last time i went there[bout 4-5 yrs ago] we found a little boy about 3 just wandering about near some cars at the edge of the market ..crying and lost being mindful of acusations of blah blah at first my two friends and i did nothing...but you couldnt leave the little thing..so we dried his tears,,gave him some toffee and we lifted him on my shoulders to look for his mum...at that point realised he didnt speak english...so with no police in sight we went up and down the stalls asking if any one knew him or any one had lost a child we were getting desperapte when a chap came running up to us..the childs father....then some of his friends most agressivly ..we explained where we had found him and how dangerous it had been... thanks...no..dont be silly not a word of it.... just frowning ..jabbering and glares...last we saw of the child he was being hit around the head...later we saw the stall the father had in the CENTRE of the market.. i wish people would look after their sprogs

Those markets are great. I don't know why they've never developed in the USA. Everyone loves them so why not here?
Buying fish that's less than a few days old is fairly hard to do here. The fish in French street markets glistens as if caught yesterday (which it probably was).
