To determine what form of homicides should be seen as the "worst of the worst", the most "heinous" and "depraved" and DP eligible as opposed to the "lesser murders" a survey by the famous forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Welner is being conducted to help determine how public opinion views this subject! Anyone who has 15 minutes can take part in the survey! I haven't done this yet, but would be interested in hearing from anyone who does do this survey! I'm especially interesting in any results of this survey! There's a button is indicated on the right side of this link below for survey participants. tinyurl.com/2mbksp

Very interesting survey. I had a tough time with the survey because I do feel that severe mental illness is a mitigating factor against depravity, and this survey didn't seem to even take that in regard or even ask such a question.
On the whole though, it presents some very tough choices such as is it worse for a killer to kill someone with whom they have had a close and trusting relationship (e.g., their child) or is it worse that a killer prolongs the suffering of their victim.

Prolong the suffering is worse imo.

There is a big difference, Karen, between "mental illness" and "evil"! The ability to plan, carry out, conceal and deny involvement in the murder is evil! Some Hollywood films have been creating fantasy depictions of murderers! These killers like Hannibal Lector and those depicted in films like "Seven", "The Dentist", "Psycho", etc. simply don't exist in the real world! A mentally ill person may be a great danger to children and other helpless people, who can't defend themselves as in the Andrea Yates case! As a rule they only strike once and then are arrested because they lack the evil neccesary to conceal their crime!
