Indianapolis - A central Indiana mother is behind bars after police say she left behind her six-year-old son. A maintenance worker at the Aspen Chase apartments in northwest Indianapolis found the woman's son home alone and called police.
Kirsten Kaba had some choice words for news cameras as Marion County deputies took her to jail.
"You better get the [bleep] out of my face," she said.
She lives in the Aspen Chase Apartments in northwest Indianapolis. A maintenance person called police after finding Kaba's six-year-old son home alone.
"Once we arrived we discovered that his mother had gone on to work and left him here because day care was closed for the day," said Sgt. Steve Blin, IMPD.
"She could have come here," said Erika Deboer, a neighbor who also has a six-year-old boy. She told us she would have gladly taken care of the boy.
Deboer fears what can happen when children are left unattended.
"How is he supposed to feed himself. We have Christmas lights up. What if he knocked the tree over? Anything could happen," she said.
Officers waited with the boy until Child Protective Service workers arrived at the apartment. They believe he slept most of the morning until they woke him up.
"He was a little shaken when the officers came in the door but he is fine now. Officers were in there playing a game of Operation with him and keeping him happy," said Sgt. Blin.
The six-year-old's mother is not only in trouble for reportedly leaving him here alone but also she's wanted in another county.
"The mother is wanted on a warrant out of Hamilton County for a traffic offense. More than likely she will face additional charges for neglect," said Sgt. Blin.
As Kirsten Kaba now deals with legal problems in both Hamilton and Marion Counties, at least one neighbor says when it comes to day care, "see if you can get some help."
Deboer would rather that no mother takes a chance on leaving children home alone.
Police tell us Kirsten Kaba's previous contact with law enforcement includes traffic violations and identification violations. She will got to court later this week for child neglect arrest to hear formal charges.
