Just a thumbs up to the U of Cincinnati for winning the Big East conference championship for the second year in a row. They'll be playing in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the New Orleans Super Dome, January 1, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. est. They are playing Florida, which means they'll need to play 'way over their heads to win, but we'll hold out hope for a miracle.

Well, here's a "kicker" - so to speak - in regard to U of Cinci and the Sugar Bowl. The Bearcats have lost their head coach. Brian Kelly, who lead the team to 2 conference wins in a row. He has opted out for 2010 after being recruited and hired to coach Notre Dame in (wait for it) New Orleans where the Sugar Bowl game will be played. The worst part is that Kelly made this announcement last week BEFORE the bowl games, something that's never done. Good coach - smarmy individual, imo.

well ***blush***. I'm not the world's best at geography, but I really do know where Notre Dame is - not far from me, actually. I think that I have the holidays on the brain leaving little room for anything else. arrrrgh Anyway, he should not have announced his new career path before the bowl games. I hope we get someone who does us proud. It would be grand to win. Send us good thoughts, Jim.

Doesn't look good for your Cincy team Beth. I'm posting this during halftime and they're trailing Florida 30-3. It'll take an amazing second half performance for them to win.
The best available coach is Mike Leach of Texas Tech. He got fired on very questionable grounds for disciplining the son of an ESPN Sports Host and former star SMU and NFL running back (Craig James). Leach is a winner. He's had Tech playing way over their ability level every year during his tenure. Don't know that he'd consider Cincy because it's a smaller school and he should be pursued by some big time colleges.
Do you remember when New Years Day was a really big deal for college bowl games. There were only about four of any consequence: Cotton, Orange, Sugar, and Rose. All the best teams were in those four games and playing on New Years Day. We used to get up and watch the Rose Parade on New Year's morning and then all the bowl games thereafter.
Now we have more bowls that you can count. For god sakes, there is even a Papa John's Pizza Bowl. They're spread out over two or three weeks. Any team with a record slightly better than .500 is sure to get a bowl invite. It's just diluted the whole bowl thing to the point where it lacks interest.

That's exactly the way I grew up, too, das. Rose Bowl Parade on NY morning and the big bowl games in the afternoon.
My children grew up with that, also. We had - and still have - open house on NY day with a buffet (2 different kinds of chili this year) laid out and refreshed often. Friends - often who did a bit too much celebrating last night - drifting in and out to eat and watch the games. Ah tradition. Final score 44 - 10. We did not expect to win. I wish they had done better, but it seems likely the players didn't have a lot of motivation, all things considered. They had a fantastic season. Hope they get a coach who deserves them. Onward . . . Ky Wildcats basketball! They are on fire this year. Next game tomorrow afternoon vs U of Louisville. UK will take it, easily, unless I miss my guess.

I think Kelly is a solid hire (by the school named after a French church and calls itself 'the Fighting Irish'). He has a solid track record at both Cincy and CMU.
What is baffling is USC hiring Lane Kiffin. He's accomplished absolutely nothing as a head coach, he's a psycho idiot, he was a shitty OC under Carroll who with Sarkisian somehow made a mediocre offense out of 5-stars at every position. On his resume, the third point down is "hot wife". When Carroll first left, I thought they'd be able to get a really good coach even with the threat of sanctions hanging over their head. I mean, you get a Stoops or Gruden, you get some minor sanctions for a year, you're fine. They're not going to get mouth raped like Michigan basketball did because that'll basically never happen again. The exact same thing--boosters giving money to recruits with the coach turning a very determined blind eye--has happened 25 times since UM and nothing has happened that was even remotely like what happened to us--basically an admission by the NCAA that they screwed up badly in our case. Kiffin might pull a Rodriguez and run the program into the ground, but he might not. Even if Kiffin can't coach his way out of a paper bag, he may very well be able to simply recruit his way to success. I just can't believe it, it's as bad as UCLA hiring Neuheisel. Another thing, Kiffin's only 34-years old and he's already had been a head coach in the NFL and an elite college program. My faith in free markets took another hit.
(fwiw: I won 21 and lost 13 against the spread on my bowl picks, best year in quite some time - yes, folks, there were 34 bowl games! nutty.)

The best coach on the market is Mike Leach from Texas Tech. He's a great coach whose offense would really have excited Trojan fans. Too bad they want for Kiffin instead. That's not going to work out well for USC

I agree, BM (stop the presses!). Leach would make an excellent hire, but he's poison from a PR standpoint for about a year or so. TTU blew it, but they were thinking of the $800,000 and a continuing soap opera.
