In a strict Islamic society like Saudi Arabia, you're best off if you pretend to be a devout Muslim even if you are a secularist at heart. If you live in Pakistan you can be severely punished or even murdered if you say anything bad about Islam (Blasphemy laws). Remember what happened to the Charlie cartoonists in Paris. There are lots of people living in Muslim societies who just give lip service to the religion and don't actively practice it. We were in Istanbul recently where over 90% of the population is Muslim. When the Muslim 'call to prayer' sounded from the Blue Mosque, we were in a crowded nearby square. We didn't observe people deserting the streets and heading for the mosque to pray. To the contrary, there wasn't any observable movement in that direction. So my conclusion is that lots and lots of people fake it. If asked to put their religion on a job application, virtually all of them will write in "Muslim." However, only a fraction are serious practitioners. On the other hand, fundamentalist Islam is just an entirely foreign and tragically inhumane world that can't possibly mix well with the far more civilized western world. Incidents like this one and other innumerable Islam inspired terrorist attacks simply put an exclamation mark on that conclusion. The problem for western governments is how to sort them out and exclude the fundamentalists from residency.
