The inquiry is the committee's first major inquiry on prison planning and policies of this Parliament and the current government's programme of reforms and efficiency savings. The committee's report on crime reduction policies and transforming rehabilitation was published by the House of Commons on 14 January 2014. The probation workers union Napo have criticised the reforms, saying that the reforms as well as staff shortages are putting public safety at risk. The Ministry of Justice said it would "robustly" contest the allegations.
