Flying Car Crashes, Just Like Our DreamsFlying cars still just can't get off the ground. A flying car crash in Canada has refocused attention on an elusive transportation goal. No one was hurt in the crash of the Maverick flying car (which is essentially a car that can fly short distances when the road ends) test vehicle, but it did make news, since flying cars — and flying-car crashes — are still rare. Small companies like Terrafugia and Maverick LSA have been working on flying cars for some time now, although in both cases, the cars aren't the flying cars of sci-fi fever dreams, but rather wheeled vehicles that can also fly. In Terrafugia's case, the "flying car" is really a small aircraft that can legally be driven on public roads if need be. Not exactly a flying car for the masses. As for the Maverick, it's really a car that can make short flights when the road ends, which makes it useful for say, working as a guide or humanitarian worker in a third-world country. A Maverick flying car Only a few of the Mavericks, which have propellers and a parasail, have been built, including the one that crashed in Canada during a test flight. The flying car has been an object of sci-fi speculation since forever, and Back To The Future Part II even promised us highways full of them by the year 2015. Obviously, that's not going to happen. But for flying cars of any type to take shape, test flights — and test crashes — will have to take place. We hope that no more flying cars crash, of course, and we don't know if there is anything for Maverick to learn from this incident or it was just a freak accident. What we do know is that neither the Maverick nor the Terrafugia will fit the bill of a truly affordable mass-produced flying car. Maybe someday we'll have airborne highways full of flying cars. But not in time for Marty McFly to steal a sports almanac. SOURCE...
