That sounds interesting, but I probably need to do a course in either biology or philosophy or both to understand that; at least, a more specific course in philosophy than I have struggled with to date!

I suppose the book will appeal to someone, but all the reviews seem fairly disparaging.

Toby comments.:- It's very interesting, what interested me is the looking at the process by which we came here, with all our consciousnesses, looking at the screen (as you are), and to think we all came from the same mistake(s) of nature down an extremely tortuous route with many strains of life falling at the wayside, because that is natural selection. I was selected for something, as you all were but nobody ever told us exactly what it is so we continue to muddle through !

"Survival" is the quick answer, but it doesn't really answer Nagel's question. However the scientists reviewing his book don't seem to think he asnwers it either. For reasons I stated above, I wouldn't know!
Writers trying to challange evolutionary theory are often criticised for distorting what has been written by evolutionists in order to justify their pet theories, which may be rooted in religion.

Toby comments.:- Religious folk like to think that we are all part of some higher plan, so I reckon that's how God got invented because you need something or someone mysterious, powerful, awesome, etc to explain stuff we cannot comprehend. My Wife had a hang-up as a child when they told her God sees everything you do, she believed this like children tend to and it scarred her mentally. I would have liked to shoot the person who told her such nonsense !

A lot depends on whether you believe in a God of fear and vengeance or in a God of love.
Parents keep an eye out for their kids; does that make them snoopers or tyrants?
Of course not.
The hell-fire mob have got a lot to answer for in distorting Jesus' message of love!
