Does anyone have suggestions for replacing the expression "WTF", which I consider mega stupid, crude and uncreative. Retro expressions like "Holy Smokes!" and the French "Sacre bleu!" are possible options, but maybe unmodern. Can anyone think of something contemporary and "classy" to replace this gutter garbage?

WTF has become so common that it is no longer as offensive as the full expression. You can usually get away with using the term WTF in mixed company without offending anyone. However, if you say, "What the F___," you are considerably more likely to offend someone. I don't think there is an equivalent expression because WTF may be used either to introduce a question: WTF are you talking about? or as an interjection: WTF! That's a load of bull! Much as you might dislike it Anna, I'm afraid WTF is here to stay.

"What the Sam Hill?" and "Holy smokes!" really went down the path of no return too, although I smile affectionately if someone still uses them.
"What the flim flam?", "What the Fudd?", etc. are my attempts to push the f-word out of it's present position.
It's sounds especially bad when women + children use the f-word.

What not just use English to say what you want such as, "Boy am I surprised!"

I believe that this is more of a lack of knowledge of our own language and how to use it.
Consider, using such words to put a person in their place or for shock value, or just to use them. If young people went through a single term of the use of Shakespearian English and learned how you can really put a person in their place or demean them and never use a single bad word. How satisfying to know that you have made someone look small and that they have to go home and look it up in a dictionary. Of course that is assuming that they know how to read.
As with many other things in our society, the use of language has deteriorated. Just try to hire someone who can actually write a comprehensive and understandable memo.

Most people using such language "think", it makes them look big and earn respect of others, who are not as outspoken, and that may be true with those having little knowledge of good manners, vocabulary or people skills. Fortunately, they are sadly mistaken by a majority.

Wrong thinking Men an tol, why are you talking about ways and means of putting people down. You should be thinking of thoughts to uplift people not make them perhaps feel worse than they already do. That is what is wrong with the world, apparently some people want to make sure that everyone receives their comeuppence instead of having everyone's best interest at heart.

I have noticed that the word loose is used in the wrong context. Loose means slack. Lose can be used when a person says I often lose my car keys. I have seen this word being used on other forums too. I'm just wondering why?

Thanks for that information , it seems unlikely that you would be arrested if you were merely swearing while having a conversation that was within ear shot of someone. intention is the key. i am sure the police have better things to do with their time! Hi Gibby, it is classed as disturbing the peace if someone complains, so the person would be warned, if they refused to comply, they would be charged and probably fined..

You can take it any way you want Scottish Lassie. Here you are doing as you often do and that is to try to change the context of the thread. Postings were talking about the use of expletives within the context of being negative to the context of a dialog, or directed at a person, or being used to shock or just being used to use. I replied in that context.
Certainly using words of the type I suggested can be used to uplift people, they can be used to glorify a relationship, they can be used to bring people together, but that was not the context of the thread. So I give back to you as you gave; wrong thinking Scottish Lassie.
Something I rarely get involved with is the words used by others here in the threads, but you brought this up and did it, if not wrong, only in a very narrow sense:
Loose as meaning ‘slack’ is only a very narrow meaning of this word and following herein is a more comprehensive meanings of the word as a Noun: grant freedom to; free from confinement syn: free, liberate, release, unloose, unloosen turn loose or free from restraint • let loose mines • Loose terrible plagues upon humanity syn: unleash, let loose make loose or looser • loosen the tension on a rope syn: loosen become loose or looser or less tight • The noose loosened syn: loosen, relax SENTENCE: They want to loose the prisoners. Then as an adjective: 1. not compact or dense in structure or arrangement • loose gravel 2. not tight; not closely constrained or constricted or constricting • loose clothing • the large shoes were very loose 3. not affixed • the stamp came loose syn: unaffixed 4. (of textures) full of small openings or gaps • a loose weave syn: open 5. not tense or taut • the old man's skin hung loose and grey syn: slack 6. lacking a sense of restraint or responsibility • a loose tongue syn: idle 7. not officially recognized or controlled • a loose organization of the local farmers syn: informal 8. not carefully arranged in a package • a box of loose nails 9. (of a ball in sport) not in the possession or control of any player • a loose ball 10. emptying easily or excessively • loose bowels syn: lax 11. not literal • a loose interpretation of what she had been told syn: free, liberal 12. casual and unrestrained in sexual behavior • he was told to avoid loose (or light) women syn: easy, light, promiscuous, sluttish, wanton 13. having escaped, especially from confinement • dogs loose on the streets • criminals on the loose in the neighborhood syn: at large, escaped, on the loose Then as an adverb: 1. without restraint • cows in India are running loose syn: free

Hi Skitler, tell me then, why it is that you get so much pleasure in being so crude most of the time? You are on the ball and very smart with your replies, so you are not stupid in that regard., but surely you can't be like that 24/7 there is such a thing as decorum. im not I sleep about 8hrs
there is the such of a lot of things
you tell me some things
why do you feel the need to stalking me?
why do you act dumber than you are? (pretending you don't know how things work)
why on the 22 September last year did you post that facebook was asking you to join
you had already joined facebook on 7 march last year
when others subsequently mentioned facebook, you ignored them,
why was that?
why don't you post on a jesus lovers forum?
any unsatisfactory answers to the 4 questions above and you will be put on block here also.
just saying
Hi Skitler, if you are still around? I did manage to join Facebook but I caused trouble for mysef because of my ignorance. When I signed up by giving them my particulars and password, the particulars disappeared and instead of me putting the page back into inbox, I thought they hadn't accepted my password so filled in my particulars again and again and again each with a different password. The next thing I knew was that I received a message telling me that my account had been compromised, and as I didn't know how to rectify the matter they locked me out and wouldn't let me back in.. I would receive periodical messages asking me to log in, but when I tried, they would block me again. Occasionally I would manage to log in and be able to send a message and then I would be blocked again. In the end I just gave up. I really am ignorant of how to work things, so I am not pretending.!!!

Hi Men an tol, under the heading Sentence it seems bad grammar to me. Shouldn't it be set loose? You went to great lengths to show me up, that's not really in my best interests as it has made me feel bad. I already knew that a person should try and stick to the allocated thread . Away back I didn't know for a long time, then I started to understand. But ofcourse I'm not the only person who does it. It seems everyone has a go occasionally. Especially the ones who did know but still answered my posts on the wrong thread. PICKY!!! PICKY!!! PICKY!!!

Hi Skitler, I was trying to find a way of conversing with ECKists when I first found Facebook but made the mistake of finding myself on someone's line or whatever it is called . I received a message asking me to ask permission to join but as I once again didn't know what to do, I did nothing, so I was barred.!!!

Hi Anna. I'm willing to read the initials in a post by those who want to use it rather than see it spelt out in its entirety. I would never use the expression myself even as initials.

We certainly weren't taught at school how to swear. maybe not by the teachers
you know the words and there meaning
if it wasn't at school
where did you learn them?
You hear them in the street, just because you know them that doesn't mean that you use them.

I just watched the Academy Award Best Picture nominee "American Sniper." Lots of use of the F Word there but fully understandable given their circumstances. When your buddy just got his head blown off right next to you, I doubt you'd be concerned about decorum. Hi Bush Admirer, I don't like hearing the word and I don't like seeing it written down in full, but I am willing to accept the initials in a post by someone if they can't restrain themselves.

What not just use English to say what you want such as, "Boy am I surprised!" The expression "Boy" in our fast paced society is rarely used by the younger generations @menantol . "I'm surprised" is a pure English, which I support, but it's too disciplined too exorcise the f-word from those who are infected with it.
Gomer Pyle's "Shazam!" is polite and cordial, but I don't expect it to topple the f-word either.
I often said "Holy Mackerel" around my son and never used the f-word, but younger people see that as corny and something for retro fans like me.
I think words like "fooey", "fudd", "fudge" and other such harmless f-words are here and now the best bet to win back ground from the f-word epidemic.

Scottish Lassie I'm hoping those f-initials can be seen as meaning a variety of f-words just as "darn", etc. replaced "damn" before the d-words became obsolete.
It's about linguistic hygiene, which like other forms of hygiene makes you and what you stand for look good.
