It wouldn't have surprised me if the figures had been higher. It's a hideous thing to stick a human being in a cage. Anyone who's there for any length of time could easily decide their life's over, except for their body still lingering to feel anguish with.

Must be so hard to be imprisoned. I can't imagine really. Not just imprisoned but all the rest that goes with it...
But what else is there to do with people who commit crimes?

Prisons are full of people with mental health problems who are a high suicide risk anyway.
There is a woman who posts on another board whose drug addict daughter went to prison. She visited her at Holloway and couldn't believe the transformation; smart, made-up, well and with a job in the kitchen. Men's prisons are perhaps a bit more stark, but some people do make lives for themselves behind bars. Many years later, she is still clean and still working.
