The Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, Bishop of Manchester and the Church of England's senior spokesman on communications say's it makes no sense to have editors for arts, science and business but not for religion.
The Bish say's "We see no logical distinction between the genre of arts, science and business (all of which include reflecting and discerning between different opinions and perspectives, and have BBC editors) and that of religion (the landscape of which likewise demands a 'trusted guide' for both internal and external stakeholders).
What a load of bilge.
"We urge the trust and executive to give serious consideration to this proposal; one that is intended as much for the benefit of people of no particular faith as for those of faith."
Well, I have no faith and I fail to see how a having Religious editor at the BBC will benefit people like myself.
Senior members of the church's general synod rejected a motion attacking broadcasters over the lack of religious programmes. It was replaced with a more anodyne statement expressing appreciation of broadcasters' religious output, and voicing more general concern at the reduction in religious broadcasting.
Have they not listened to R4? We are treated(?) to the Daily Service, Choral Evensong, Sunday, the Moral Maze, Something Understood, and the infamous Thought For The Day - atheists are, of course, excluded.
If I want religion there are churches I can attend, my licence fee should not be used to pay for this mumbo jumbo.
