The Government has been forced to apologise to the Pope over official documents that mocked his forthcoming visit to Britain. Some civil servants came up with some astonishing proposals contained in secret papers drawn up earlier this month following a 'brainstorm’. The ideas, included in a memo headed 'The ideal visit would see ...’, ridiculed the Catholic Church’s teachings. By Islamic standards the death threats would have been issued by now. So what is all the fuss about? One suggestion was for the Pontiff to open an abortion clinic, another that he should launch a range of Benedict's Condoms, there were also proposals that he set up a child abuse helpline, spend a night in a council flat in Bradford and even perform a duet with the Queen.. The proposals were circulated among key officials in Downing Street and Whitehall. Recipients of the memo were furious at its content and an investigation was launched. One senior official was found responsible and has been transferred to other duties. Yesterday the Foreign Office issued a public apology after being approached by The Sunday Telegraph, while Francis Campbell, the UK ambassador to the Vatican, met senior officials of the Holy See to express the Government’s regret. The Rt Rev Malcolm McMahon, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Nottingham, was astonished and angered by the proposals. He said: “This is appalling. You don’t invite someone to your country and then disrespect them in this way. There is understood to be increasing unease at the Vatican over the level of hostility that the Pope is likely to face in Britain, with protests and even threats of arrest from secularists. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/7628752/Ministers-apologise-for-insult-to-Pope.htmlOh Lord, why me?

Hm, I'd better stay out of this thread or I might say something I'll regret.
Riot will understand what I mean when I say how pleased I am that Rangers won the SPL title today! (They're my Scottish football team!)

wondering if any other accomplice of child molestors would be touched with kid gloves and treated with respect too .. i ve lost all respect for this man when it came out that he and his peers were only concerned about the churches reputation when the molestation scandal became obvious .. and tried to sweep it under the carpet to "protect the reputation of the church" ..

no matter what ones personal view is of religion..the catholic church..etc etc the point is from a department of state toward another state we as a country ought to expect better ...its known as diplomacy as individuals we can have what ever opinion we wish and voice it...DEPARTMENTS OF STATE are expected to be proffessional at all times notice no stupid childish ness toward the chinese and tibet mugabe the saudis and other arabs how about the muftis of iran and its PM.....its always an easy target these people go for..they must be of the same calibre as the odious alistair cambell..ill manner low life louts
a private opinion is one thing...but in the name of the government its entirely another we are dumbed down to the dregs...and sadly the dregs are winning

And IMHO Benny IS one of the dregs.
The Bishop of Rome is NOT a head of state - he is a religious leader.

The Vatican is not a state. It is an aberration tolerated by the Italian government. The guy in the gold lamé dress has no diplomatic status.

The UN does not recognise the Vatican as a state. It was a creature of fascism. Not recognised??? At present the Holy See – which is, in effect, the Vatican’s government – has Non-Member State Permanent Observer status, which permits it to speak at and vote at UN conferences. The Vatican City State was founded following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between the Holy See and Italy on February 11th 1929. These were ratified on June 7th 1929. Its nature as a sovereign State distinct from the Holy See is universally recognized under international law... The Holy See is a full member of various international organizations including: the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE), and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). The Holy See is also a permanent observer state in various international organizations, including the United Nations General Assembly, the Council of Europe, UNESCO, WTO, ILO, WHO, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. In 2004, the United Nations General Assembly extended the rights and privileges of the Holy See as an observer state within the UN, through its Resolution 58/314 of 16 July that year. Up until 2002, the Holy See and Switzerland were the only two observer states in the United Nations. In 2002, Switzerland voted in a national referendum to take up full UN membership. The Holy See is also a Non-Member Accredited State of the African Union (AU), a Member of a bilateral agreement of cooperation of the League of Arab States (LAS), and Guest of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO). You must be thinking of Scotland

How many years did Hermann do in prison for his beliefs. What do you think Mandela would do to child-rapists, quietly move them somewhere else.

The point is, we paid for Mandela to visit here after he was SA president...meaning he was just a civilian.
The BBC didn't try and whip up a storm about it...I'll leave you to ponder the seasons for that
