In the wild, animals have no one to help them should things go wrong and they probably die in agony. I feel for them.
Well actually in the wild wild animals would snap them up pretty quickly so they would not suffer too long, in nature video when a big cat gets it victim they do not seem to suffer to much, it is all over pretty quickly the cats are experts are killing their prey pretty quickly without too much suffering.
The victims are suffocated, so that is a form of suffering. Perhaps they have a heart attack due to fear.

Possibly the seem to go pretty peacefully, I think the predator cuts off the blood supply to the brain and they faint and so do not know much about it in most cases. I guess they learn how to kill their prey with the minimum of fuss.
