I would say so, as it is my belief that violent people, if not rehabilitated, when they die they will be born again as in reincarnation, with the same propensity to be violent in later life. Rehabilitation to change their way of thinking before they die, is definitely most important.

Rehabilitation may help in some cases. For most they have I think a predisposition towards violence and crime. A cure? It's doubtful.

It depends on what you mean by violent crime. If you're talking, say, a punch-up that gets out of hand that's not remotely comparable to premeditated murder, for instance.
As it happens I had a mispent youth as a juvenile delinquent and because of that I've been able to help young offenders turn their lives around because they listen to me since I come from the same mean ends and had the same early struggles as they did and, like them, drifted into crime.
But some people seem beyond redemption and for them I can't see any chance.

I live in the Southern part Of the U.S. in a fairly large city. I couldn't tell the number of times someone here has been murdered and by the time the police found out who did it, someone had killed them. I'm not trying to make this place sound like Iraq because it's not. I'm in Kentucky. Here we can carry a firearm openly or concealed, either is legal here. Their logic was, crooks carry guns, why can't law abiding citizens. Whew.

It is prisoners teaching other prisoners how to commit crimes and get away with it. They're more like graduate shools for advanced crime than places to rehabilitate. Fixing broken people is not a high success occupation. Good luck woith that.

From my point of view, every attempt should be made to rehabilitate perpetrators of crime, and should be shown kindness as part of that process.

If I had my way, as soon as a child entered primary school, meditation classes should become part of the school curriculum right through to University level. It should be made compulsory.

I agree, that seems like a good idea. Chances are where I'm at is a wee bit more violent. Kentucky-USA the jails are filled to over flowing. People that should be in jail are released so they can keep the more violent offenders.

The incorrigibles could probably benefit from this as well, if they could be persuaded to take part?

I wish that were the case. It's not just the area where I live, it's through out the country. There are those like my husband that buys a gun. Keeps it for home protection, or for hunting. He even takes it to the range and shoots targets. There are others that obtain a gun and it's a tool to get even with their perceived enemy. A good way to get easy money. With the mind set of some of these folks I question where rehabilitation programs would help.

From what I believe, the potential norm is to eventually become nonviolent human beings, therefore it is expected that slowly but surely, criminal types will eventually reach that goal via rehabilitation programs. They are definitely necessary.

Unfortunately this is not the best of all possible worlds. I wish we all lived in a Rebecca of Sunny Brook Farm world but we don't.
