During the time the "Byzantine Empire" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_Empire existed it was referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire and it's citizens referred to themselves as "Romanos". . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantium QUOTE: This usage "Byzantium" was introduced only in 1555 by the German historian Hieronymus Wolf, a century after the empire had ceased to exist. During the time of the empire, the term Byzantium was restricted to just the city, rather than the empire that it ruled.
Christianity had replaced the Western Roman Empire's religion, but much of the brutality in ruling was retained.

@menantol DAS (formerly BushAdmirer) Big Lin You’ve got it right Anne the term was developed (for the empire) after it was gone. It’s funny how we (our current scholars) develop such terms and then we use them as if those actual people used them. It seems to be a certain degree of arrogance on our part.

"Eastern Roman Empire is undoubtably the most correct title for this civilisation. The city of Byzantion ceased to exist after it was chosen as the site for Constantinople. The Roman emperor Constantine the Great preferred to reside in Constantinople instead of Rome and later the Roman empire split into West + East.
