It is what it is Scottish Lassie. Just pure nonsense. Sorry if you're offended. No offense intended. Just pointing out the obvious. Just as obvious as what's beyond a barrier you never crossed DAS (formerly BushAdmirer) . Atheists always amaze me when they try to explain consciousness and why it exists. Anna, you are clearly driving at something with this question to Bushadmirer. I suspect that that you are intimating that ‘Atheists’ go through all sorts of convoluted pseudo logic to make some point about consciousness. It is a fascinating subject with little agreement as to definition. Professor Daniel Robinson has offered, “The subject of consciousness is among the most vexing in philosophy, science, and psychology. As a “state,” consciousness seems resistant to translation into physical terms and measurements, though its dependence on a healthy nervous system appears to be as close to a “cause-effect” relationship as any in natural science. “ One associated question is, are humans the only species which demonstrates consciousness or consciousness-of-self? If other species exhibit such self-awareness, does that have any impact on the efforts to define human self-awareness? It does seem that in scientific studies there is a wide gap in knowledge even to the point of a completely new scientific discipline.

We consider the members of our ‘family’ (mother, father, brother, sister, mate, children), to have a consciousness of themselves. But do we consider that as a simple singular truism? Those who have raised children have watched them experience their surroundings and become aware of themselves. Is that thing (consciousness) always the same and they just simply become aware? Or, does it change with their changing physical being. Remember that baby when first becoming aware of their hands, becoming aware that they are their hands, the simple act of moving an object grasped in one hand to the other hand. To be aware that is “I” that am doing it. At the same time when we have watched those who are aging begin to seemingly loose pieces of “being I.” Of course there are always those who have differing types of physical challenges and mental challenges, does “their I” change or stay constant throughout their life. The point, is consciousness directly part of the physical side of our being or is it all ‘other?’ Or is it some combination? Science has not answered these questions. I must admit that I lean toward it being tied to our genetic self. That is, what evidence of conscious we can see, there is evidence that it changes relative to our physical makeup and physical changes. At the same time, we see changes in the way we view the world based on our life experiences. It seems more than just physical. Even though a great deal has been researched and written on this very subject and, we have reference to almost uncountable philosophical works from the past and many different societies, this is a field wide open for new research and benefits. Just imagine if science could arrive at some definitive conclusions. Then assume that you are working in the field of Anthropology and trying to figure out when past peoples did certain things and now entirely new answers could be forthcoming.

So what is a ghost BLC? And how come Jesus was seen by His disciples after he was dead? and why did Jesus say to the thief on the cross, "you shall be with me in Paradise"? So there must be life after death, don't you think? I merely pointed out what the bible says. Nothing more. I had my own experiences. Hi BLC, As has been pointed out before, there are inconsistencies throughout the Bible, so I guess we can both believe whatever we think is correct.

Hi Men an tol, I mentioned once before, that the physical body cantains certain aspects of behaviour that will unfold accordingly as the body ages and we become older, But this behaviour pattern can be modified by our ability to pick and choose, in other words, freedom of choice. We earn every experience that we have, because of our choices.

We earn every experience that we have, because of our choices. Certainly in those cultures where freewill is prized, freedom to choose can have an impact. However, our genes can have an impact on use that is beyond our will to change. Clearly a psychopath doesn’t chose to be a psychopath or chose to not be a psychopath. Our genetic makeup affects us in many ways over which we have no control. Ways over which free will has no impact.

What Bible verse or verses are you referring to blc ? Here are a couple from both the Old and the New Testament. "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead KNOW NOT ANY THING, neither have they any more a reward: for the memory of them is forgotten. Also THEIR LOVE, AND THEIR HATRED, AND THEIR ENVY, IS NOW PERISHED. Neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun." Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest." Ecclesiastes 9:10 Luke 16:25-26 (New International Version) 25"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'"Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is BOTH DEAD AND BURIED, and his sepulcher is with us UNTO THIS DAY… For DAVID IS NOT ASCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS…" Acts 2:29 & 34 (1st part). John 3:13 ESV No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

Hi BLC, it is the physical body that lies in the grave that knows nothing, because the brain is no longer fuctioning. Ordinary people didn't know or believe that Soul existed. Even today, people still think that they are the body. They don't see themselves as being Soul, which they are.

Those quotes were not made by ordinary people and they did indeed know about soul. I believed all that they said. and who are we, if we are not ordinary people I do believe that we are all ordinary people, having extraordinary experiences. I loved what they had to relate. Would you like to relate your experiences? I would be interested in hearing them, I am all ears when it comes to this subject.

Hi Men an tol, there is a reason for all that happens, and this has been created at some point of our lives by our choice. In being born with the innate propensity to be a psychopath, that person still has the freewill to go along with how they feel or prevent it from happening. Whether we are psychotic or not we are still responsible for everything that we do. There is a lesson in there for someone, we just have to figure out the answer.!!!

I told my wife that I wanted her to take all of our money, sell the house and cars, liquidate our retirement fund, and buy me an Egyptian style pyramid after I die, so that I can get to the afterlife.
She won't go for it.

Hi BLC, I was just having a look through the thread above and came upon the Bible quotation John 3:13 No one has ascended into Heaven except He who has descended from Heaven. The Son of Man.
I find this strange seeing Jesus was thought to have told the thief on the cross that he, the thief, would be with Him in Paradise. Where is Paradise?
Jesus is also supposed to have said that He would be sitting at the right hand of God. Paul himself indicated that there were at least 3 Heavens, so I am a bit puzzled as to what it all means. Any suggestions?

I hope there is an afterlife, but what matters is to take care of each other on earth, and by the looks of things in the world today we arent doing a very good job.

I believe in Karma which is behaviour that we have put into action and which affects our life in the future. Every effect has a cause, we reap what we sow. That will always be the case as long as the decisions that we make are acted on.
