A scientist claims that the Pluto mission may enable us to protect the earth from collisions with comets.

The best images of Pluto are yet to come. The New Horizons space probe made it's closet approach today and will soon start transmitting it's best images and data analysis ever. space.io9.com/pluto-has-a-broken-heart-in-the-latest-photos-from-new-1717785162 QUOTE: Pluto has a Broken Heart in the Latest Images from New HorizonsJuly 14, 2015 This is Pluto in Charon in real color, but exaggerated to emphasize the compositional differences. The image was taken by the New Horizons probe early in the morning of July 13 before its historic flyby. At 3:38am on July 13, 2015, the New Horizons probe used three color filters its Ralph instrument to capture the data for these enhanced colour images of Pluto and its largest moon Charon. The image is real colour, but not true colour: the red filter is mapped to red and so on, but this isn’t at all what you’d see with your naked eyes. The colors have been cranked to extremes to emphasize compositional differences. This is also composite image reducing the distance between the worlds. interestedbob kronks @menantol mikemarshall Scottish Lassie

I have saved it in my IPhone photo album. It's certainly exciting, to discover more about the Universe inwhich we all live. I have always been interested in space and finding out the pro's and con's of Creation. It is all amazing to me and I'm agog with anticipation as to whatever will be revealed next. We are certainly grateful for the intelligent people who make all this possible. I think it is all too wonderful for words.

Pluto has a tail! Well not quite like Disney's Pluto, but more like a comet's tail.

I do take a great interest in the real life exploration of space, chris, and I fully understand that Science Fiction is just that - fiction. On the other hand, virtually all of what is currently happening out in space was once predicted in Science Fiction, and has now come true. Without Science Fiction, scientists might never have been inspired to do the things that were once considered far fetched and crazy. Hi Interested Bob, Yes! I heard that fact many years ago, but now with actual exploration of space happening, that is now more exciting. I prefer reality to make believe. I'm looking forward to more info being relayed as time goes by. I will appreciate it if you keep me informed as I have difficulty in getting the info myself.

This photo shows Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, in true colour. Full story here. Here's a photo of Pluto's largest moon, Charon. Full story here. Here are a couple of Pluto's smaller moons. Full story here. And here's a parting shot of Pluto as the spacecraft heads away out into space. The halo effect is caused by Pluto's atmosphere being backlit by the Sun, which is hidden behind the planet. It's proof that Pluto does have an atmosphere, otherwise the planet's edge would be sharp, and probably invisible against the blackness of space. Full story here.

The New Horizons space probe is stll sending back data from it's Pluto fly by. Glaciers have been discovered as well as an atmosphere that extends 80 miles above the surface.

They're still analysing and receiving new data from the New Horizons space probe.

Fascinating; I love all this space exploration. I totally support funding for this kind of project.
