In the US this trial would be a violation of the Double Jeopardy Laws! But Italy does things it's own way. Anyone who has been acquitted of a crime there can worry for the rest of their life that they could be retried. www.foxnews.com/world/2013/09/30/amanda-knox-retrial-begins-monday-in-italy/ QUOTE: Amanda Knox retrial begins Monday in Italy September 30, 2013 APTOPIX Amanda Knox_Cham.jpg This image released by NBC shows Amanda Knox during an interview on the "Today" show, Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 in New York. (AP Photo) The retrial of American student Amanda Knox and her Italian ex-boyfriend for the 2007 murder of a British student will begin Monday in Florence, the latest chapter in a lengthy and complicated legal saga. Knox has repeatedly denied playing any role in the death of Meredith Kercher, who was found with her throat cut in the house the two women shared when both were exchange students studying in Perugia, Italy. Knox has refused to be present at the retrial, citing the desire not to relive the experience of being imprisoned for a crime she says she didn't commit, as well as the financial strain and commitments of school. Her former lover, Raffaelle Sollecito, is not expected to be in court Monday, though his lawyer has told Sky News he would attend later hearings. Knox and Sollecito were convicted of the killings by a lower court in 2009, but their convictions were quashed two years later on appeal. The appeals court cited weaknesses in the DNA evidence in letting the two go free. However, last year, Italy's supreme court overturned the appeal court's acquittal in March, citing "shortcomings, contradictions and inconsistencies" in the ruling. In reversing the acquittal, the high court also suggested that Rudy Guede, a drifter convicted and sentenced to jail for the murder, did not act alone. DNA evidence is expected to be at the center of the new trial, with a lawyer for the Kercher family telling Sky News that the judge in the new trial might order new tests on the alleged murder weapon as well as the bra Kercher was wearing at the time of her death. That evidence was questioned by experts appointed by the appeal court, who in turn were challenged by the supreme court in hearing the acquittals. A new appeal verdict is expected to be reached by Christmas, before the case returns to the supreme court for a second time. If a guilty verdict for Knox is upheld, the Italian government may put in an extradition request for Knox, though the U.S. would likely refuse it.

Knox's ex-boyfriend Raffaelle Sollecito expresses a pessimistic view of the state of affairs on the Today Show.
Here's a brief summary of the events. Apparently the prosecution has won Patrick Lumumba over to their side. Lumumba embittered that Knox was pressured by interrogators into making confused statements that were interpreted as implicating him in Meredith Kercher's murder and causing his imprisonment wants to see Amanda Knox suffer.

Amanda Knox has correctly determined that her best interests are served by staying in America and staying away from Italy. My only question is why would her lover Raffaelle Sollecito subject himself to another trial. Why hasn't he fled Italy too? That's the only mystery remaining.

Since Sollecito is an Italian citizen he could be likely extradited to Italy if he doesn't find a country that would grant him amnesty from the medieval inquisition farce in Italy. The other students in the home where Knox and Meredith lived quickly got attorneys after Mignini's police interrogated them. Remember Mignini is a medieval Catholic who thinks that only by imprisoning these sinful young people guilty or innocent can they be saved from their sinful modern ways. He has a bizarre agenda!

Maybe Sollecito has more guts than Knox or maybe he's feeling guilty about getting away with murder. Youonly gotto look atKnox's faceto see she's a psychopath.
And if Knox wasn't an Akmerican none of this media circus would have happened.
Who remembers poor Meredith excepting forherfamily?

As expected the bread knife that Mignini's investigators took from Raffaelle Sollecito's apartment had absolutely no trace of Meredith Kercher's dna! The prosecutor Mignini is left now with nothing but hype and bigotry in his attempt to railroad Knox and Sollecito.

Raffaele Sollecito took the stand and asked the court to look at the truth and give him his life back. He also described Amanda Knox as his first love.
It was admitted that the bread knife taken from Sollecito's apartment was not the murder weapon.

Amanda Knox gave an interview to UK television. She stressed that she wants justice for her friend Meredith and wants her to be remembered as the person she was and not for how she died.
Amanda describes the methods of the enhanced interrogation she was subjected too and the confusion and disorientation she felt when the interrogators continually tried to put words in her mouth.

The video gives a quick summary of the trial. The Kercher family lawyer Francesco Maresca suggests that the Supreme Court's overruling of the acquittal is evidence for them.
Patrick Lumumba wants his vengeance against Amanda Knox for the confused words that Knox's interrogators put in her mouth placing Lumumba at the crime scene and causing him problems. Although Knox immediately retracted the nonsense that she parroted after 4 hours of enhanced interrogation the police arrested Lumumba anyway and mistreated him.

The prosecution in the Knox/Sollecito case in the murder of Meredith Kercher is already presenting it's closing arguments! Hopefully that means this farce of a trial is coming to a finish and Raffaele Sollecito and Amanda Knox will be acquitted. Remember this ridiculous miscarriage of justice started when Amanda Knox after 4 hours of enhanced interrogation became confused and began to make nonsensical statements that the interrogators put in her mouth by endless repetition. Knox immediately retracted these statements, but the police refused to accept the retraction.
BTW part of the prosecution's argument consists of the claim that a homeless man saw Raffaele Sollecito near the crime scene. Oh come on! Any homeless person knows you can get some coffee a little snack, if you can tell interesting stories. I'm more likely to believe the prison inmate who said that the convicted murderer Rudi Guede admitted to him that Amanda Knox was not present at the murder scene.
The prosecution also wants to use the discredited claim of a salesperson, who said Amanda Knox wanted to buy a g-string. I addressed that on my Nov.18 2013 post here: biglinmarshall.proboards.com/thread/5516/myths-convicted-amanda-raffaele-sollecito www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2013/11/25/Prosecutors-make-closing-arguments-in-retrial-of-Knox-Sollecito/UPI-50081385401343/?spt=rln&or=1 QUOTE: Prosecutors make closing arguments in retrial of Knox, SollecitoNov. 25, 2013 FLORENCE, Italy, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Italian prosecutors Monday made closing arguments in the retrial of Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend for the 2007 killing of British student Meredith Kercher. Prosecutor Alessandro Crini said testimony from a homeless man who said he saw Knox and Raffaele Sollecito near the apartment the American woman shared with Kercher, a fellow exchange student, in Perugia on the night of the killing was "trustworthy," the Italian news agency ANSA reported. The murder created an international stir since Knox and Sollecito, her boyfriend at the time, were accused of killing Kercher in a sex game gone wrong. Knox and Sollecito were convicted in 2009 before they were acquitted on appeal in 2011. Earlier this year, Italy's top court reversed the 2011 decision by the appeals court and ordered a new trial to be conducted in Florence. The prosecutor also asked the court to consider as reliable testimony from a shopkeeper who said he saw Knox in front of his store the morning after the murder. Knox and Sollecito have both testified they were at Sollecito's apartment at the time of the killing and later. A third defendant, Rudy Guede of Ivory Coast, is serving a 16-year prison sentence. Sollecito attended Monday's hearing, while Knox, who is from Seattle, was in the United States. The trial began in September and a sentence is expected in January.

At least Sollecito had the guts to go back to Italy and face the trial. That's more than you can say for the narcissistic Amanda Knox.

Dearest Lin, Knox is enrolled in a university and can't be expected to cancel all her classes to face these bogus charges again. Don't you believe in finishing your education? She made the sensible decision.
She already spent 4 years in an Italian prison because she parroted some nonsensical statements that interrogators put in her mouth.

The most intriguing possibility is that they're found guilty, Raffaele Sollecito is led off to prison for a long confinement, and Amanda Knox runs free in Seattle. Wonder what sort of uproar that would cause?

Well, on Anna's point I think that murder is a rather more important issue than university education.
On BA's point I think that's a possibility and it would just show how yellow and dishonest Amanda Knox is.
