Hopefully the Irish judical system doesn't think like the judical system in the UK which is protecting a child rapist from US extradition because it feels the US laws are too harsh! See this thread: biglinmarshall.proboards.com/thread/4939 tv.msnbc.com/2013/08/15/us-wants-to-extradite-largest-facilitator-of-child-porn-from-ireland/ QUOTE: US wants to extradite ‘largest facilitator of child porn’ from Ireland Aug. 15, 2013 DUBLIN – The United States has asked Ireland to hand over a 28-year-old man who the Federal Bureau of Investigation says is the world’s largest facilitator of child pornography, the Irish High Court heard on Thursday. The request from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder asks Ireland to extradite Eric Marques to face four charges of advertising and distributing child pornography, said barrister Pat McGrath, representing the Irish state. An FBI agent, during an earlier hearing, described Marques as “the largest facilitator of child pornography on the planet”. He is accused of using encryption technology to offer an anonymous hosting service for websites with a total of more than 1 million pornographic pictures, including images of rape and torture of pre-pubescent children, the agent said. Marques has not made a plea in court, but his legal team has indicated they plan to challenge the extradition. His father was quoted by the Irish Independent newspaper as saying his son was innocent. Marques, who holds both Irish and U.S. citizenship, grew up in New York until the age of 5 with his Brazilian father and Irish mother, and has lived in Ireland since then. Marques told the court he had earned substantial income from a web hosting business that he operates in an apartment on a Georgian square in central Dublin. His initial request for bail was refused by the judge who described him as a flight risk, citing the transfer of considerable sums of money to Romania and inquiries made from Marques’ computer about applying for a Russian visa. The charges each carry a maximum prison sentence of at least 20 years. The FBI agent said incarceration for life without parole was a possibility.

mm...well based on what he's done I have mixed feelings on what his outcome should be BUT if a European country is saying they wont release him because the United States will be too harsh about it, then I will take that European country's opinion seriously. They're much more civilized than us over there. We are OVERBOARD with laws and punishments BY ANYONE'S STANDARDS.
So I would like to know this: if we intend to torture him (being caged is torture, please) lifelong over this, and Ireland says that's too harsh, what then would Ireland do with him? What more humane alternative would Europe recommend?
(That's not rhetorical. What? What should we do with him?)

Well, to be honest this is a difficult area. If he was a direct abuser then it would be more straightforward. But as he's only distributing the stuff then however disgusting his actions are (and I think we ALL agree that the distribution of child pornography IS disgusting) it isn't the same as directly abusing a kid.
For instance, in the adult movie industry it's not uncommon for actresses to be beaten, raped, forced to consume all kinds of bodily fluids and generally treated with brutality and contempt. Yes, these women are being paid for what they do and they give their consent to what's done to them so reluctantly I have to say that I'm not a supporter of banning this type of CONSENSUAL pornography.
Kids by definition can't give consent and if these kids were abused then distributing that abuse is a sick and disgusting behaviour that IMO ought to lead to a spell in jail.
But how long?
I don't know the answer.
For the nonces themselves I've said repeatedly that I favour castration and life imprisonment without parole.
For the distributors they are no better or worse than any other criminal who in other circumstances would sell drugs, pimp or human traffic.
So I don't know how long a sentence a POS like this guy deserves but I'd figure somewhere in the region of 15-20 years.
But I can understand the US position even though I broadly agree that LWOP is too severe a punishment for this man's crime.
My heart is with the American authorities but my head tells me that it's not proportionate punishment and so I have to reluctantly agree with those who don't want to extradite him there.
