I saw this and was a bit peeved at Animal planet. I'd expect this nonsense from The SyFy channel but not them. If SyFy had aired it, it would be acceptable as people would know it's a hoax.
The format in which they presented this was completely irresponsible. People watched this and believed the government is hiding something and the rest of the conspiracy theory kinda garbage. We have enough problems in this country real and made up, we don't need them adding to the made up problems. This show was nothing more than another "Blair Witch Project"
If they had presented the few facts they had in a "what if" format and filled in gaps with their ideas that would have been great. Instead they decided to go for the stir the pot approach to titillate and entice. Shame on them.

Actually, the American government had to tell people that mermaids arent real after that show first aired. "Late last month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration published a curious addition to its Ocean Facts section: "Are Mermaids Real?" Describing them as "half-human, half-fish sirens of the sea," the post goes on to describe the various appearances of mermaids in folklore, from cave paintings to The Odyssey. However, NOAA comes to the final conclusion that "no evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found." The agency says the post came in response to several requests from the public after Animal Planet aired a special called Mermaids: The Body Found that claimed to paint "a wildly convincing picture of the existence of mermaids."

Sometimes its not about being gullible, it's about trusting the source. That's why I was a little peeved by Animal Planet. To present it in the format it did breaks a trust. Who's to say a creature of this sort doesn't exist? There are things we haven't been able to explain all over the world, including in our seas. But to present it as fact that the government is trying to cover up?

I remember reading that the mermaidwas partly based on something called the dugong.

Well.....why I thought this was important was because of the radar testing that is going on by the military in the oceans. The two NOA people said their main goal was to get that stopped. That it is causing mass die offs of whales and effecting many other sea animals. I think the main point was more to say that we are causing problems that could cause mutations or who knows what to marine life.

If they for instance said the experiments were causing some certain fish to grow an extra head.....no one would do anything.......but you say mermaids.....and you get worldwide press.

Oh definitely........fun.........you also do have to wonder what the experiments they do out in the ocean are doing to aquatic life!!! If they could be altering genetics and causing some really odd things to happen out there.........
