www.yourjewishnews.com/2013/02/25951.html QUOTE: Girl,14, lashed to death after being convicted of adulteryBy: Sarah Weiss A little girl was arrested, charged and convicted of adultery, according to court proceedings in Bangladesh. Hena Akhter was only 14-years-old, the youngest of five siblings, who lived in Shariatpur, Bangladesh. Her problems began when her married cousin, Mahbub Khan, who was three times her age, returned to her village and became fond of Hena. Khan started following and harassing her on the way to and from school, where she was in the 7th grade. So the father of Hena filed a petition to the elders of the village in order to put a stop to his behavior. Khan was fined $1,000 payable to the Hena's family and was ordered to leave her alone. He did not. Months later, he seemed to be waiting for her to come to his house. Hena went outside to use the bathroom. That's when Khan jumped behind her, gagged her with cloth, forced her behind some bushes, beating her and raping her. Khan's wife heard Hena's screams and found her husband raping the girl. His wife then dragged Hena away, while beating and stomping her. When the family went to a local court, the judge ruled that Hena Akhter committed adultery. She was sentenced to 101 lashes. Khan was sentenced to 201. At the of the punishment, Khan managed to escape after only a few lashes. Hena Akhter only got to 70 lashes before falling unconscious. She died a week later in the hospital.

This is appalling. Countries where rape victims are considered the criminal...what the hell is wrong with those people? I constantly hear bad things about "feminists", but if ever there were some women who needed more leverage...

I found the story on a BBC site. Perhaps the most important thing to note is that the punishment was illegal: " Seven people, including Mr Khan, have been arrested in connection with the death of Miss Akhter while 11 others are still missing. This is the second reported case of a fatality linked to a Sharia law punishment since the practice was outlawed last year by the High Court. Activists say dozens of such fatwas or religious rulings are issued illegally in the rural areas of Bangladesh every year. Muslim scholars say these fatwas are illegal as village-level clerics or elders do not have the authority to issue such rulings " www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-12883165It also seems that the rape aspect is in dispute; she may have consented as the court found. Not that that should make much difference, of course. As has been said, it is difficult to prove rape; there has to be four male witnesses which makes it near impossible.

In the US and Europe the age of consent is 18 or over! This girl was 14! Thus it was rape! If Bangladesh doesn't have an age of consent in it's law books than it's worse than backward!

Good point. But I suspect girls are married at 14, so the age won't offer any protection. I see that the man was sentenced to twice the lashes she was meant to take, which might reflect his culpability...who knows?

Her age isn't really the point. If a girl is forcibly made to have sex (which is what I mean by not consenting) she has no way of getting redress because she cannot prove the truth. If she complains and the man is not convicted of rape - which will be the case inevitably - both he and she will be punished for the crime of adultery. So womenn don't report rape, and men continue to do it. , and this will happen until the evidential rules are changed. But of course that won't happen because it is written in the Koran.
I was surprised to find that not so many years ago, girls as young as 12 were allowed to marry in some US states.

Ooo er...in an idle moment I looked at Wiki and see that marriage under the age of 16 is allowed in many US states, though parental consent and/or a court order is needed. I think there are one or two that allow marriage as young as 12. I really can't get worked up about a 14 year old girl choosing to have sex with a 17 year old ...though I suspect in this case she really was raped. (and the alleged rapist is much older than she) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriageable_age

I am confused by this bit.
"he seemed to be waiting for her to come to his house. Hena went outside to use the bathroom. "
1 Why was she going to his house?
2 "Hena went outside to use the bathroom" outside where? Outside his house? Was she in his house?
I am having trouble understanding this can anyone make sense of it?
