I caught a bit about this on the news the other night. Women have always been a woman's biggest critic. I know we pay attention to what guys like...we want to attract men...(most of us anyway), but we really care more about what other women think of us. We strive for beauty, money(ie. security), love, thinness. Not necessarily in that order. Most of those desires last a lifetime. Hopefully we don't self destruct trying to achieve any one of them.

I agree with your point that women care about what other women think. Two points: Women like to get manicures and pedicures. Men don't care what your nails look like. Your figure yes, your nails no. Jewelry is another false obsession of women. Men don't think jewelry makes women more attractive. For example, Megan Kelly is a news host on Fox and a beautiful woman. She was doing the news the other day with big dangling ear rings. Her ears look fine to me. Her ear rings, not so much. I was once at a meeting in Florida where eight or ten couples were sitting around a large table. To prove my point, I asked the women to all put their hands under the table. Then I asked the men at the table to describe any jewelry, such as bracelets or rings (other than wedding bands) that any of the women was wearing. I also asked them to comment on who had long fingernails and/or good looking fingernails. The men all responded with blank stares. The women, on the other hand, were able to comment about the other women when they got their turn.

I think women are always the harshest critics of not only other women but of themselves. Whatever is in style will always seem to be whatever you are not at the time.

Too much emphasis on being skinny.
I never though twiggy was all that attractive, she was just well.. skinny.
But Marylin Monroe was a real knock-out. Total femininity.

I don't think the guys go along with this "thigh gap obsession" at all. Well never say never, but any guy who does is IMO clearly in the minority. Twiggy despite all of her promotion never made it big either.
The thigh gap obsession is obviously some female hang up. Hmmm Barbie Dolls have thigh gaps. Could that be the origin of this hang up?

If Barbie, with her plastic measurements, were a real woman, she's look odd as heck.
