Another hysterical overreaction! I wore braces too once! You can't take big bites out of an apple with braces! The link has a video on this case! www.foxnews.com/us/2013/03/29/student-reportedly-suspended-for-bringing-butter-knife-to-school/ QUOTE: Massachusetts 13-year-old suspended for bringing butter knife to schoolMarch 29, 2013 ATTLEBORO, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – From a toy gun to a butter knife, a new controversy has arisen over an item a student brought to a local school Wednesday. Morgan LaPlaume, a Wamsutta Middle School student, was simply trying to cut her fruit for lunch because she has braces and can't take bites out of whole fruit, says the LaPlaume family. During lunch, the vice principal happened to be walking by when he apparently saw Morgan with the butter knife, took her to his office, and issued her a suspension. The school's principal told FOX 25 that the vice principal was following the rules set forth in the handbook which does not allow kids to bring knives to school. The principal added that parents and guardians are asked to sign that handbook at the beginning of each academic school year. Melissa LaPlaume, Morgan's mother, says she signed the handbook, but the rules should not be so broad and that other factors should be taken into consideration before a suspension is issued.

A butter knife isn't very dangerous; it has no sharp edge or pointed end. But for those reasons, it is a rotten tool for peeling fruit. I've not tried it, mind, but suspect that a plastic knife would be no worse. I wonder if it really was a butter knife?
Having looked at the picture, it isn't what I'd call a butter knife. You can't see the end properly but it looks quite pointed; something you could do damage with, anyway.
I tend to side with the head over this; a knife is a knife.

A lunch utensil shouldnt be cause for suspension. They could have just confiscated it and talked to the mother. Yeesh.

The suspension was only for one day, but you may be right; it will appear on her record. Though we don't know the full story; maybe she wasn't peeling an apple when she was found with it.
