It's that time again when I'd like members to put forward names for their candidate as July Member of the Month. Chefmate, Drewsmom, Mindy, Beth and Anna are not eligible at this time. I'm going to nominate Random Voice though at least a dozen other people also occured to me!

Clemie the Dog is one of the most interesting posters we have here.
Of course, there are so many people whose names come to mind.

Retarsed. Has a lot to say and says it well - whether I always agree or not.

But Anna, that will only take us up to the SEMI finals! DEARESTI'll have my nominee Friday morning and he/she will get my vote!! I want to learn to give those who i disgree with a chance to go against those, who my heart favors! The Thursday evening game between the Oakland Athletic's and the Los Angeles Dodgers will decide that!

I'm nominating the "Bionic Jimbo". Just for getting his recuperating ass back here to spread the truth in his own unique and charming style. AH

That is a considerable relief considering that she has contributed far more than I have to this board both in terms of quantity and quality.
By the way, Anna, in cricket each side has (in the 20/20 or one-day versions of the game) one 'innings' each; in Test Matches each side (unless one wins by an innings and 'x' number of runs' has two innings.
I'm very reluctant to have my name put forward as I do not feel that I have contributed sufficiently. We already have a number of other candidates all of whom are far more worthy of the honour than I am.

True the amount of time spent here should play a big role.. I'm going to continue with baseball playoff nominations because i certainly do have my personal preferences. I've heard people complain that a cricket game is too long and often must be continued the following day! A US Baseball game in the US lasts on the average 2 and a half hours..Still i'm sure we could learn more about cricket if you let your favorite for MOM go for the nomination against a big contributor to the board, whose views you abhor, based on a cricket game. I suppose you're probably more of a socceer/football fan though!

There is now 20-20 cricket where each side gets 20 overs (of six balls each) and has to try to win instead of forcing a draw. Cricket would improve if they scored by points instead of runs and if all are not out (or declared) a draw no matter how many runs difference. A Test Match is normally scheduled for 5 days, matches inspired by Kerry Packer in the 80s, over 3 days. Great stuff for hot climates lolling back swigging cans of fizzy Australian lager, terminal boredom for the rest of us.

In contrast to baseball it's difficult for the bowler/pitcher to get the batter out! The batter doesn't have to run if he hits the ball in play and doesn't like his chances of getting a run.. in baseball the batter has to run if he hits the ball on the playing field.. Since cricket players don't use a protective webbed glove to catch the ball as in baseball it's a lot harder to catch a well hit ball for an out.

The wicket-keeper wears gloves. I suppose the theory is that other players are far enough away not to be in direct line of fire. Probably caught out or run out are the commonest 'outs'. For what it's worth, England won the women's series but I think the West Indies won the men's. The style of bowling seems to be very very different. They were saying this morning how very slow the women's spin bowling is, but that is much harder to deal with than fast spin. Straight fast bowling is not much more than intimidation: you either get it or you don't, it either goes off the field or gets caught. Spin can go anywhere and bounce somewhere else and the slower the less predictable.
