I've tried to watch soccer a number of times but I've never been able to understand why it appeals to sports fans in other countries (or anywhere).
Here in the USA we have soccer in perfect focus. Nobody cares about it.
It seems to be about running back and forth with very little scoring. It would be easy to fall asleep during the game if not for the noise.
Ice Hockey is a similar game that I also don't get. However, it does seem more interesting that soccer because of the physical contact. I would never buy a ticket though.
NBA Basketball is my favorite sport. These are the best athletes and you can see the talent.
I like American Football but I'm not obsessed with it.
For Euro sports I think professional cycling is outstanding. I love the Tour de France and the Giro di Italia. It's easy to see that these athletes are amazing.
But Soccer is kind of like badminton, car racing, and Bocce Ball in terms of my interest level.

Yeah, well so does everyone else. There are lots of sports I don't get and there are games lke basketball I do not think are worthwhile, but I am not going to lose sleep over them. Nor I am I going say that you are wrong to watch it. You got your thing, I got mine, just like the rest of the World. I cannot stand cricket either, but I accept that millions do. I bet you could go the rest of your life and never see a single game of football again, so where the problem? You live in a Country with tones of sports, so why bother telling us the sports you hate?

I agree with you totally. Football bores me, but I like Formula One and Ice Hockey. Fortunately, they are big things here in Finland, so I get a surfeit of both, but I know that many in the UK do not like those sports. I lose no sleep over it, nor do I bother to explain why I enjoy them. I just do

I love ice hockey, basketball and boxing but the rest of the sports are boring to me; I really don't get soccer at all and can't understand the fuss of it that people go through.
Other sports I will sit down and watch are ice skating, curling, and bobsledding and don't forget bullriding......love to watch and wish I was young enough to do it myself

I like Am. pro football, major league baseball and college basketball. Soccer is very popular in the schools here. The kids love it.

I really cannot understand the appeal of American football. It always strikes me as symbolic of the national outlook, full of talk about independence but all chareographed by numbers. Rugby has something going for it when it is not a case of each side trying to kick the ball into touch as far up the field as possible. I've actually developed quite a taste for Gaelic foootball and its close Australian relative - both of them a brawl around a ball basically. Then there is hurling - possibly the least televisable sport in the world, in effect overhead hockey so that if the camera pans the ball it's too fast to see anything else and if it doesn't it's impossible to see where the ball is.

Why is there soccer? The answer's very simple - because it's FUN!

Best not to mention Cricket then! ;D
The Rules of Cricket
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

Still no interest in soccer but this is late June which means that the Tour de France will be starting very soon now. I think professional cycling is one of the most difficult and interesting sports. Le Tour is the ultimate bike race. It used to be that you couldn't see much. A devoted fan could drive to one of the mountain passes and watch the riders go by. But that wasn't like really following the race. Le Tour was always one of the greatest sporting events but it was hard for the fans to follow. Technological advances including satellite communications and small lightweight video cameras have made all the difference. Now you can watch Le Tour on television and see all of the important challenges. It's a great televised sporting event that takes place over a three week period of time. Go to www.letour.fr/ and try to watch the live TV broadcast of the high moutain stages. I will be a sports treat.

Dearest Das! I love resurrecting old threads! I'm glad too that i can bash your favorite spectator sports like cycling and basketball, without you being offended!
I concede that i like the low scoring in football/soccer! I suggest too that basketball rules be changed and the baskets raised to such a height that basketball would also become a low scoring duel of sharpshooters! Can't you just feel the joyful stress of a basketball rising to a great height and the fans being split up between prayerful hopefulness and paralysing terror as to whether or not a point will be scored??! ;D

Personally, I have no interest in either baseball or American football. I was a boxing fan for many years but I lost interest in it because too many of the decisions stunk.
Right now the only sport I watch is Women’s Mixed Martial Arts. The grappling skills of the women in it are phenomenal and they cannot hit hard enough to inflict any serious damage on each other.

Maybe football has no attraction. Maybe this is why no-one went to South Africa for the World Cup, no-one watched on TV and the whole thing was a failure ignored by the media. Everyone was obsessed with the South Riverside Men's Rounders final.

Although the Dutch appeared to be under the impression that they'd entered a martial arts tournament!

Ten million people tuned in to watch the TV special when LeBron James announced his decision to move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. LeBron is a two time NBA Basketball MVP so this is a very big deal for basketball fans.
During the first part of the program one of the announcers made a comment about the big TV audience for a program that was just an announcement. He said, "This is a very slow sports week. There is really nothing much going on."
Guess he forgot about the World Cup and the Tour de France.

At least it's a MAN'S game - not like that sport for pansies where a bunch of overweight batty boys dress up in mediaeval armour because they're scared they might get hurt by a tackle!
