Reflection - If one of my more controversial heroes, Gore Vidal, had done nothing notable except coin the phrase, "No good deed goes unpunished", he'd still deserve hero status. I am reminded at least once a week that this quote is one of the greatest truisms of the 20th century, and will endure forever.

Vince Lombardi was a remarkable human being and I'd recomend When Pride Still Mattered by David Maraniss, which offered a balanced look at Lombardi's life. One feature is that Lombardi's drive for sucess and sacrifice did come at a price to his health and personal life, as expected. (I also liked Maraniss's book Roberto Clemente).
Some Lombardi quotes:
- Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything - It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up - Practice does not make perfect. Oly perfect practice makes perfect (sort of take from Dale Carnegie) -The measure of hwo we are is what we do with what we have -Winners never quit and quitters never win -ONce you learn to quit, it becomes a habit -The greatest accomplishment is not ever failing, but in rising again after you fail (this falls in line of experiencing defeat) -Fatique makes cowards of us all -Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. -Live as if you were living already for a second time -Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence (my favorite one here) -The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender
