I am a big advocate of free speech and do tend to believe that an open honest debate is the best way to deal with controversies! Unfortunately a number of inappropriate remarks have been posted, which have nothing to do with defending one's own position or challenging the position of another poster! We should immediately delete posts insulting an innocent murder victim or truly hatefilled attacks on another poster. Some of the street talk or value judgments that are directed towards other posters are very disturbing, but i usually let it go! I hate censoring! Let's make our posts worthy of being read !

I also hate censorship but there have been a couple of examples of personal abuse recently that were completely unacceptable.
There have also been some racist remarks posted which are also not going to be tolerated.
Please, everyone, let's keep the debate passionate but not over the top.
I don't have many rules but I advise anyone who isn't sure to read the rules before they post anything inappopriate in future.
Thanks, everyone.

Goodness, I haven't seen anything like that here....but then I by no means read all the threads.
The trouble is that someone can actually cause another poster deep offence without even getting personal at all, simply by attaching an abusive word or insult to a view they deeply hold.
Just something to think about, folks!

Just something to think about, folks! neither have i seen anything that bad. i certainly haven't seen anything that could be remotely considered racist, but then again, as you, i don't read every thread. however, there is NOTHING wrong with saying that a view is imbecillic, as long as you don't tell the poster that he's an imbecile. HUGE difference

I think too a more effective way to deal with a viewpoint that you feel is off base is to present facts instead of a value or moral judgment.

Sometimes one or two of the anti-abortionists' comments have left me feeling a bit raw! But maybe I shouldn't take part in debates on the subject if I'm going to be over-sensitive.

Censorship really isn't the answer. And this board is a paragon of virtue compared to some others I drop into from time to time. So when a posting that you object to pops up, then have a go back. Only do not seek to ban the views of others; however repugnant you find them.

I've got to say that " insulting an innocent murder victim" seems a strange target for deletion - unless of course the victim is related to a poster. But I didn't see the post in question.

Are we allowed to see the threads in Vendetta? Are they continuing there or is it a bin?

In fact, it is the very core purpose of boards like this. AH

Only do not seek to ban the views of others; however repugnant you find them. I'd like to keep the "free speech" aspect of this board as protected as possible. Maybe some people are offended by some of my posts too. I really don't intend to be insulting, but some people have certain sentivities about certain issues. The following may be seen as "insulting" to the 911 victims, which is certainly NOT my intention! Others feel it's a slam against the conspiracy theorists, who believe the towers needed more than these airplanes to collapse. They are more than welcome to present and defend their views here.. To be honest i just love to have the chance to post a Godzilla pic here cuz i have a silly side and hope things will lighten up. We shouldn't assume that an "off base post" has sinister motives. Debate facts and theories and try to find some healing humor in this sometimes cruel world and this forum will thrive! And please no personal attacks!

But what is the point of being able to see all the wrong things people have written about PC and not being able to correct them? It's torture!

On reflection, you are quite right - if we all stopped to wonder who might take offence by our posts, we would either post nothing or it would be so dull everyone would be dozing off and knocking themselves out as they fall forward onto the computer screen....

Maybe some people are offended by some of my posts too. In my country, unlike Germany, France, and Austria, one does not have the RIGHT not to be offended.

I don't understand why conversations about insulting/abusive posting on any board always end up talking about the same two things - free speech and no one having a right not to be offended.
These are irrelevant remarks to my way of thinking.
No discussion group (and that's all a messageboard like this is) at any level operates without a set of rules. From the United Nations to two of us in a pub talking into our beer, there are rules and limits. Often they are unspoken but all in the group know them.
When we are (most of us) strangers to each other it's normal that the limits get tested and offence gets given, taken and expressed. It's also normal that we seek to understand what offends and seek to avoid a surplus of offence if we want to ensure longevity of the group.
Free speech is not at all curtailed by phrasing opinions in an inoffensive manner.
No one here is claiming a right to be offended but if they express offence that is their right under the free speech rule.
It's not about free speech or rights, it's about civil discourse.

I think too a more effective way to deal with a viewpoint that you feel is off base is to present facts instead of a value or moral judgment. the thing is, many chaps choose to get offended by the truth. it would be morally irresponsible to pussyfoot around and acquiesce to what is comfortable for them, and allow them to continue with their delusion. actually, my telling someone to not be daft, is NOT saying that they are, it's telling them not to be, and is an effort to prevent them from being such. it is a kind thing to do

AH it is really quite simple. making the statement that "politicians are crooks" is NOT a personal attack on anyone. since the fact is that the majority of them are, NO ONE has a right to take offense to the comment, even if they are a truly honest politician.
