www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/Heights/9417/history.htmlThis site is a mine of information about the horrifying practice of placing offenders in these devices as 'punishment.' It often led to the death of the unfortunate individual who was locked up inside them. Do not confuse this with the 'Aunt Sally' or 'Renfaire' type of event. These appalling devices were instruments of torture and death and it is quite incredible that their use lingered on till the nineteenth century.

They were quite ineffectual punishments as well because if you were a Reggie Kray you had your mates around to protect you and take note of anybody who tried to have a go. If you weren't - the pillorie is a form of crucifixion, the stocks a bit better. When punishments like that were ameliorated, they fell flat for opposite reasons. There was a law in Jersey that men guilty of extra-marital sex had to appear outside the parish church on Sunday wearing a penitential shroud. So what do you think became stud-upmanship and who did the girls tip the wink to after church? It wasn't a law that lasted long
