The History of Lol CatsAs early as the 1870s, British portrait photographer Harry Pointer created a carte de visite series featuring felines posed in various situations. To these he usually added amusing text intended to further enhance their appeal. Other notable early figures include Harry Whittier Frees and (using mounted animals) Walter Potter.  However the first recorded use of the term "lolcat" is from the anonymous imageboard 4chan, in 2006, which featured bizarre cat pictures on Saturdays, or 'Caturdays'." Their popularity was spread through usage on forums...  The images became a sensation in early 2007 with the advent of I Can Has Cheezburger?", which is the site to go to, to see lolcats. It was also the first picture they posted. And the lolcat phenomenon grew from there...  There was then "ceiling cat"...  and "basement cat" (purported to be evil, and living in your basement)...  From those two came the notion that ceiling cat is God, and basement cat is evil.   Other types of lolcats have included "monorail cat"..  and "hover cat"...  But I like lolcats because they're funny...  |
