I saw "The Hunger Games" today! It was pretty intense. People getting killed and killing each other to increase television ratings, but presented in a non gory and almost sarcastic manner. What would be neccesary to entertain humanity of the future? A desensitized humanity that has become bored with everything else and wants something traumatically captivating.

I'm "reading" this with my eyes averted, Anna, because I've just started reading the trilogy. Halfway through book one and enjoying it immensely.
It's a kids/teenager's/young person's book, written very simply, simple sentences, words sparingly used, yet -- or because of that -- the imagery and storyline is strong and compelling.
I can see why it has become such a big deal.

I have read the first two novels and while the premise isn't original it is still a good read. But I wouldn't say that it was for kids though.

Well I don't know how far we can look down our noses at a society which uses killing for a sport, since by watching the movie, we are already the willing spectators.

We are not meant to be on the side of those that run the games. We observe what they do to their citizens and are meant to sympathise with the victims especially the main protagonists who want to survive.

You're right, it's not a children's books. I should have just said that it doesn't seem to be written for adults.
I finished Book One and am onto Book 2. Thought Book One was fab.
