I hadn't expected to see the fragrant Jacqui Smiths scam beaten quite so soon; but New labour are certainly full of surprises, aren't they? You will recall how our Home Secretary, the guardian of law and order, was claiming the odd twenty thousand or so a year for spending a couple of nights in her sisters house in London. She at least had the excuse that her real main residence was up north.
But along comes McNulty. He and his wife already own two properties in central London; one about three miles from Westminster, but that didn't stop him from claiming the second home allowance for his PARENTS house in London; which is further away from Westminster than his own residence. He states that he has stopped making this claim, (probably because the Press were on to his scam)and that it was not against the rules.
So THAT'S OK then!

The saddest thing of the lot is that we're not SURPRISED or shocked by these sorts of things anymore.
Corruption is a way of life now (though it's still a long way short of, say, what goes on in the Middle East, China, and Africa.)

Pigs serve a purpose and deserve to get their snouts in a trough, 99.9% of MP's serve little purpose and are deserving of a bullet (especially labour MP's). And you are right, Lin, it's not even shocking to read stuff like this anymore. AH

Oh, not moaning at you or anything Ben, but could you add links to your threads if you have them, we have a lot of American folks here and it's just easier for people to get the whole story if they have a link. Cheers! AH

Lying, corrupt, greedy labour scum, Tony McNulty has said he did nothing wrong by claiming second-home expenses on a London house where his parents live. He received allowances worth thousands of pounds for the property in his Harrow East constituency, which is eight miles from his main home. He said he made "considerable" use of the home and it allowed it him to do his job more effectively. But he said "anomalies" in the expenses system did need to be looked at. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7957555.stmAH

Then along comes Hoon! Again, a man who has done nothing wrong, and who has acted within the rules. But a man who, as Minister for defence, lived in a grace and favour flat in Admiralty Arch for years, while he rented out his second home in central London, and who also had the temerity to claim the full housing allowance on his main home in the sticks.
Each time I think it can't get any worse............ but it does!!!

What makes my skin crawl is that folk will begin to reckon that the Tories are any better!
...........and the Libdems have proven by their time in charge of Town and County Councils to be as bad as any of them!
Power corrupts. Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely!

And now Adams, McGuinness and co have been claiming tens of thousands for London properties, even though they refuse to attend Westminster at all. Truly, you couldn't make stuff like this up! Sinn Fein MPs have been paid a total of £437, 405 for these two flats. But fear not, for all is above board and within the rules.
A sinn fein spokesman says..."we make no apologies for ensuring that people voting for Sinn fein get the same democratic entitlements as everyone else". Ahhh...I SEE!!! They are claiming the money on behalf of their electorate! THAT'S all right then. For a moment I thought they were ripping the English taxpayer off!

..."we make no apologies for ensuring that people voting for Sinn fein get the same democratic entitlements as everyone else". !! Did you make that up or did they really say it? Doesn't matter really because it fits them, either way it's darkly comic and made me laugh out loud.

I'm on statins for high cholesterol. If I have to go on to tablets for high blood pressure as well I shall sue the government. Reading all this virtually daily in the newspapers is doing my health no good at all.
