Wikipedia gives away a lot of the plots and storylines, but since i was unfamiliar with this film as well i took a look. tinyurl.com/dawyh8Tennessee Williams seemed to specialise in these disturbing psychodramas.. He was also responsible for "A Streetcar Named Desire". uh huh, and Taylor made 2 other film versions of Williams' plays - The Long Hot Summer and Night of the Iguana. Part of her career seems to have leaned toward that kind of movie. Another one, while I'm thinking about it, was Raintree County which was partially shot in KY where I live. I was a young child at the time, so don't remember, but have always heard family and friends of our family talk about seeing some of the movie being made because they lived near there. RC might be disturbing to some. It was an adaptation of a novel by Ross Lockridge - actually a civil war period piece, ET played a charming woman who had major mental/emotional challenges. If I remember correctly, the film was more pathetic than disturbing. The most unsettling thing to me was the choppy cinematography that worked in, out and around the fact that Clift had his face crushed and partially paralyzed mid-way through the shooting. It's pretty obvious. In the first scene of the preview, he is fine, then, there's a shot of his back and when he turns around (in spite of all the patch work and makeup) he's very different. This trailer has a long war sequence, but there's a little with the main characters at the first. It seems to be all that's available. There's no hint in this of the troubling aspects. A link in case anyone is interested.

Well Beth I'm sure Wikipedia would give away the disturbing aspects of "Raintree County". I find "Cold Mountain" very disturbing! The criminal elements of both sides in the Civil War are highlighted. The dirtiness and horrific cruelty committed by both sides make one wonder how this war could have ever been linked to "heroism". The "All audiences" rating that this film received can only be justified with an attempt to make people learn to hate war at an early age. I feel the torture scenes should have given "Stone Mountain" an R rating at least.

Many war movies are hard to watch, I think. Cold Mountain was very sad to me. The performances were outstanding. I'd like to see it again. Yes, count on Wiki to spoil the plots.

Mulholland Drive is another film that haunts me! Some of us may have fantasized as children of becoming a famous actor or actress. Naive perhaps, but some people do live their dreams! Mulholland Drive is a very surrealistic film, which shows how close dreams and nightmares can be to each other. How hopes and dreams can become entangled in dark passions and confrontations with sinister forces.

I haven't seen Mulholland Drive, anna, so can't comment. Is it good enough to be worth watching the dvd? Here's another. "Kids", made in 1995. I did not like this movie - found it heavily depressing.

Mulholland Drive is a very surrealistic film that leaves a lot of the episodes open to interpretation and many questions are unanswered.. How taking a wrong turn in life or succumbing to certain desires can bring you to the dark side is a prevailing theme. Probably people, who enjoy the Twilight Zone episodes would like Mulholland Drive.

I'll try to pick up a copy in the next few days and give it a look. I'll report back. Thanks for the information.

A truly beautiful film. Mulholland Drive has something uncanny about it, like the film "Blue Velvet" does. People being cruel or succumbing to obsessions and impulses.. Only there never was a ray of hope in Blue Velvet!

Only there never was a ray of hope in Blue Velvet! ah yes, Blue Velvet, my #1 choice for all time disturbing film. 1986, and the teen directed hack and slash were considered the definitive "horror" movies. Mention "disturbing film" and the immediate reply would be A Clockwork Orange. And then . . . there was Blue Velvet. David Lynch - film noir - Dennis Hopper (seamless performance of madness). I think I already embedded the "In Dreams" sequence over in Name That Tune. Here's the trailer.

Even more disturbing than Blue Velvet is "8 mm" with Nicolaus Cage! The widow of a millionaire finds an 8 mm millimeter film locked away in a vault, which appears to show the torture and murder of a young woman. The widow hires a private dectective ( Cage ) to investigate. He finds out that the film is authentic and confronts the demonic predator who murdered this teenager! The Dectective is very disturbed after seeing this film and wants to know the "WHY?", which motivated this cruelty. Evil really does exist, despite attempts to substitute this reality with a politically correct scientific explanation!

It looks like it would be kind of scary though. I like Nicholas Cage too. I think I'm gonna rent this movie!

At least justice triumphed in the film! These grisly murders of pregnant women like Bobbie Jo Stinnett, Tiffany Hall and others to rob their unborn children all occured after this film! This wouldn't be the first film to inspire evil murders, but this is really so evil that i wouldn't mind if the 1st admendment was briefly suspended to make this film disappear forever.. At least it's not in the movies anymore!

The "Star Wars Holiday Special" was deeply disturbing...so disturbing that George Lucas has vowed that it will never see a Video/DVD release or be shown on TV ever again. AH

Anna, Trubb...it's horrific, it's one of the first things I ever downloaded when I got on the interwebs (it was never shown in the UK or released in any media format).
I will not traumatize myself any further by posting a clip of this, but suffice to say, there is a perfectly valid reason for Carrie Fisher being bombed out of her fecking skull while she takes part in it.
That muppets clip is well cool BTW, Artoo rocks! (and Mark Hamill is a legend).
AH

That is real Science Fiction. Watch that instead.
