Another Doomsday prediction based on the Mayan calendar is spreading and has a surprising number of believers. www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2007-03-27-maya-2012_n.htm QUOTE: Does Maya calendar predict 2012 apocalypse?By G. Jeffrey MacDonald, Special to USA TODAY With humanity coming up fast on 2012, publishers are helping readers gear up and count down to this mysterious — some even call it apocalyptic — date that ancient Mayan societies were anticipating thousands of years ago. Since November, at least three new books on 2012 have arrived in mainstream bookstores. A fourth is due this fall. Each arrives in the wake of the 2006 success of 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, which has been selling thousands of copies a month since its release in May and counts more than 40,000 in print. The books also build on popular interest in the Maya, fueled in part by Mel Gibson's December 2006 film about Mayan civilization, Apocalpyto. Authors disagree about what humankind should expect on Dec. 21, 2012, when the Maya's "Long Count" calendar marks the end of a 5,126-year era. Journalist Lawrence Joseph forecasts widespread catastrophe in Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation Into Civilization's End. Spiritual healer Andrew Smith predicts a restoration of a "true balance between Divine Feminine and Masculine" in The Revolution of 2012: Vol. 1, The Preparation. In 2012, Daniel Pinchbeck anticipates a "change in the nature of consciousness," assisted by indigenous insights and psychedelic drug use. The buildup to 2012 echoes excitement and fear expressed on the eve of the new millennium, popularly known as Y2K, though on a smaller scale, says Lynn Garrett, senior religion editor at Publishers Weekly. She says publishers seem to be courting readers who believe humanity is creating its own ecological disasters and desperately needs ancient indigenous wisdom. "The convergence I see here is the apocalyptic expectations, if you will, along with the fact that the environment is in the front of many people's minds these days," Garrett says. "Part of the appeal of these earth religions is that notion that we need to reconnect with the Earth in order to save ourselves." But scholars are bristling at attempts to link the ancient Maya with trends in contemporary spirituality. Maya civilization, known for advanced writing, mathematics and astronomy, flourished for centuries in Mesoamerica, especially between A.D. 300 and 900. Its Long Count calendar, which was discontinued under Spanish colonization, tracks more than 5,000 years, then resets at year zero. "For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in." Part of the 2012 mystique stems from the stars. On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time," Joseph writes. But scholars doubt the ancient Maya extrapolated great meaning from anticipating the alignment — if they were even aware of what the configuration would be. Astronomers generally agree that "it would be impossible the Maya themselves would have known that," says Susan Milbrath, a Maya archaeoastronomer and a curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History. What's more, she says, "we have no record or knowledge that they would think the world would come to an end at that point." University of Florida anthropologist Susan Gillespie says the 2012 phenomenon comes "from media and from other people making use of the Maya past to fulfill agendas that are really their own."

My youngest son graduates from High School next year.
They have already chosen their slogan - "Class of 2012 - the world ends with us!" I thought it was funny!!

That's hilarious, Sadie!
On a serious note - I've read a lot on this lately.
Basically saying that the Mayan Calendar ends in 2012 is rather like saying that on December 31st each year the world ends.
It just goes on to January 1st and it's the same with the Mayans.
A new "long count" cycle starts.

Well, if you read some interpretations of the Mayan Calendar the end of the world has already happened; others it's not due for another four or five yearrs.
The way I look at is every year is 31st December but Januayr 1st still comes around!
And of course the tourist trade in that French tonw must be doing all right!

Not even the Mayans claimed Dec. 21, 2012 is the end of the world. So make plans for Christmas!

The Doomsday cultists have quickly reinterpreted the end of the Mayan calendar as bringing in a new age of peace. Amazing how anyone could consider the ancient Mayans, who sacrificed their children to demonic gods as being capable of telling us the truth about anything!

The Mayans may have had some strange rituals but slaughering children doesn't appear to have been one of them: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacrifice_in_Maya_cultureThe God we read about in the Old Testament was the one who slaughted innocent children in Sodom and Gomorrah...probably elsewhere too if I bothered to look.

The Mayans left their children in mountainous caves as sacrifices to their gods. There are many references to human sacrifices in Mayan writings!

Goodness.........I think the Mayans slaughtered just about everything they came across..........don't think age mattered all that much to them.

Yes - if I'd read the Wiki article properly I would have seen the more recent evidence that child sacrifice did take place.

The number of educated people, who were duped by the Dec. 21, 2012 hoax is depressing! One claim that the hoaxsters constantly repeated was that the earth and the solar system would pass throufgh the galactic plane on Dec. 21, 2012. The galactic plane is an imaginery diving line between the upper and lower half of the galaxy or our Milky Way. This is not to be confused with terms like the galactic equator as seen from the earth. The 2012 hoaxsters further claimed that the earth bobs up and down through the galactic plane.A typical bogus illustration of "Crossing the Galactic Plane".Another bogus hoaxster claim that the earth and the solar system pass through the galactic plane every 26,000 years. The last alledged crossing led to the destruction of Atlantis according to the hoaxsters! Now for the sobering facts based on scientific observation of the real world! www.2012hoax.org/galactic-plane QUOTE: Some authors are claiming that the Sun will pass through the galactic plane in 2012. See the illustration to the right*, for example. Authors also tend to confuse the galactic plane with the "Galactic Equator". Our place in the galaxy First, a bit of background: The Milky Way divides the night sky into two roughly equal hemispheres. This indicates that the Solar System lies close to the galactic plane1. However, "close" is a relative term. The Solar System is moving in the general direction of the star Vega. It takes the Solar System about 225–250 million years to complete one orbit of the galaxy (a galactic year) As the solar system orbits the galactic core, it wobbles or ‘bobs’ up and down through the disk of the galaxy, in kind of a sine-wave shaped path. This occurs because the mass of the galaxy is actually spread out into a thin disk. When a solar system is on one side of this disk the gravity of the disk will pull on the solar system, speeding it up until it passes through the center of the galactic plane. Once the Solar System reaches the other side, the gravity of the disk pulls on the solar system, slowing it down, until it comes to a stop, and begins a return trip. All of this happens while the systems are all orbiting the center of gravity of the Galaxy, every 33 million years or so during the complete 225-250 million year orbit2. Above the plane We are currently 'above' the plane (to the galactic North) by about 75 to 101 light years.[/b] Some researchers have suggested that when the Sun ends up above the disk of the galaxy, that we will not be as well protected by the magnetic field of the galaxy itself, and would therefore be exposed to more intense cosmic radiation4. Based on the period of oscillation this would not appear to be due for another 10 million years or so. Passing through the galactic plane But, what will happen when it passes through the center of the disk? Some have passed on the idea that a passage through the galactic plane may trigger some extra bombardment. Their theory is that as we pass through the densest part of the plane, gravitational forces from the surrounding giant gas and dust clouds dislodge comets from their paths. The comets plunge into the solar system, some of them colliding with the earth5. Are we due? Based on the solar system's current position (27 +/- 4 pc, or 75 to 101 light years)6 above the galactic plane and the fact that we are currently moving away from it7, with an estimated passage through it about 3 million years ago, we are not due to re-encounter the galactic plane for quite some time. We won’t be back through the disk for another 30 million years!8 I don’t think Microsoft Outlook goes out that far. Conclusion We have shown that the Solar System passes through the galactic plane every 33 million years or so, and that we last passed through it about 3 million years ago. We are therefore not due to pass through it again in 2012.
