Didier Drogba was rushed to hospital after being carried from the field in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Norwich on a stretcher, wearing a neck brace and receiving oxygen.
The Chelsea striker received extensive treatment from team doctor Eva Carneiro on the pitch after being knocked unconscious in mid-air by John Ruddy after the Norwich goalkeeper had punched the ball clear. Fortunately there did not appear to be any serious injury. Drogba had a CT scan in hospital and, after those came back clear, was allowed to return this evening. At this stage it is suspected he suffered little worse than concussion.
“He is showing some signs of recovery,” Andre Villas-Boas, the Chelsea manager, said. “I am very grateful to my players, the Norwich players and my medical staff for reacting so quickly to a potentially dangerous situation. They arrived in time to bring Didier back to consciousness. “We are waiting for the full exams on his concussion and hopefully nothing is wrong. He is showing some good signs of recovery which allows us to be a little bit more tranquil. I don’t know exactly how long he was unconscious for but he was out for a couple of minutes. “I haven’t seen the incident up close but it looked pretty nasty. It is natural to have physical contact in any game and things like this can happen.”
The injury to Drogba meant Chelsea’s celebrations on winning this game were subdued. Jose Bosingwa had given Villas-Boas’ team an early lead but Norwich fpulled level through Grant Holt after an error from Hilario.
Chelsea left it late to snatch the win. Ramires was brought down by Ruddy in the area and, after the goalkeeper was sent off, Frank Lampard converted the penalty.
There were scuffles between the two technical teams when the penalty was awarded, Paul Lambert and his staff upset with the behaviour of Chelsea fitness coach Jose Mario Rocha. “He has flown right into our technical area,” Lambert said. “I thought he was disrespectful. I’m not fluent in Portuguese so I don’t know what he said but if he understands Glaswegian he’ll know what I said.” Juan Mata, another Chelsea substitute, then scored the third on his debut in stoppage time to add gloss to the result. which briefly took Chelsea top of the table, until Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Bolton last night took Kenny Dalglish’s side to the summit.
