Amy Winehouse, the British singer who found worldwide fame with a smoky, hip-hop-inflected take on retro soul, yet became a tabloid fixture as her struggles with drugs and alcohol brought about a striking public career collapse, was found dead in her home in London on Saturday. She was 27.
The cause was not immediately known. The London police said that they had been called to an address in Camden Square in northern London on Saturday afternoon and found a 27-year-old woman, who had been pronounced dead at the scene. The police did not identify the body, but according to a report by The Associated Press, the London Ambulance Service said it was Ms. Winehouse.
The police said that they were investigating the circumstances of the death, but that “at this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.”

Truly talented.....but not a shocking ending.

Gosh....she had a voice that could have taken her so far........so odd that so many of these talented singers seem to have a tortured soul.

I've just heard a teenager say that Amy was the voice of a generation, she sang from pain. I find that incredibly sad.

Toby comments.:- I recently read a comment in one of the Broadsheets by a Jewish Writer telling us that Amy was one of the most successful Jewesses to have enriched us.
He will have to look for another example, pity Liz Taylor is also dead she would have been a better choice.

"one of the most successful " Wow....that's a little scary that anyone would call her career successful, don't you think? She's been a train wreck waiting to happen for quite awhile. Does anyone know if she was doing drugs before she started making it big in the business.....was it the former hubby that got her into it....or just dealing with the fame and it's fallout?

Drugs are such a sad way to end a young life.
There is no good way to end a young life but better to be killed fighting terrorists in Afghanistan than ingesting illegal drugs in London. So sad.

This news video shows Amy's last public appearance in Belgrade, where she was obviously intoxicated and booed off stage. Rather sad, but shows how drugs and alcohol can make good people look real bad.

Toby comments.:- Nobody has any explanation about why it seems to be ridiculously easy to obtain all sorts of Drugs which are in fact, forbidden in the UK.
We learn of so-called Celebrities being caught time after time in possession of drugs and they get away with it whereas six months in the slammer may just have been the trigger to get them clean and put them on the straight and narrow !!

Good point Toby. Why didn't anyone ever put her in jail?
If the rest of us were caught stumbling around in public they would throw us in there. She went to rehab multiple times and it didn't work. Why not go the tough love route and put her in jail.......you are right....it very well could have saved her.

Her father Mitch thought about having her sectioned.
In retrospect it's probably a shame that he didn't.

I could have sworn I saw some article that said she had been on a major drug and drinking binge in the week before her death.......but I haven't seen it again......has anyone else heard that?
Of course....not that it really matters.......just seems like someone should have stepped up in her life.

Her father Mitch thought about having her sectioned. In retrospect it's probably a shame that he didn't. Could he? From the little I know of the subject, he would have had to convince doctors that she was suffering from a treatable psychiatric illness, and unless things have recently changed, substance abuse doesn't count. Neither does being riddled with angst; just as well, or half our teenagers would be locked up in secure units.

Elvis Presley's last concert was also full of drug induced behavior. Most people thought it was part of the act. Elvis died about a month after this.

Fans gathered outside Amy Winehouse's London home received some surprising gifts: Amy's own clothes, jewelry and trinkets.
Father Mitch Winehouse doled out belongings to mourners, saying "it's what she would have wanted," The Sun reports. "These are Amy's T-shirts," Mitch told the crowd. "This is what she would have wanted, for her fans to have her clothes."
Some of the fans who received the clothes noted how much the items meant to them: Brigitte Pividial told the paper of the red vest she received, "I will cherish this for the rest of my life." And another fan, John Gallagher, made a note of what a pair of sunglasses and a T-shirt revealed about Amy's stature. "They were very small in size and skinny, like her figure."
The singer's most cherished items, such as her guitar and notebooks, were taken by her family. The Sun reports that a pair of her ballet shoes were in Mitche's back pocket when he left. His parting words: "God bless Amy Winehouse."
