Phil Collins's recent announcement that he was to retire from music became a tabloid media circus, forcing the singer to publish an online letter to set the record straight.
After announcing his retirement, press reports surfaced claiming the 60-year-old performer was fed up with bad reviews and lack of public interest in his work.
Collins is also reported to lament his lack of relevance in today's music scene and instead would rather spend his time collecting artefacts from the historical Battle of the Alamo.
Collins hit back at the press coverage with an online letter to fans claiming his quotes were taken out of context.
He denied he was retiring due to lack of recent success, stating that his last album, last year's Motown-themed Going Back, hadtopped the UK charts. Collins said he wanted to spend more time with his two young sons and that his press comments were meant to be tongue in cheek.
"However, the result is that I have ended up sounding like a tormented weirdo," his letter said.
"I am stopping so I can be a full-time father to my two young sons on a daily basis."
Collins's career, which includes being the singer and drummer for the rock band Genesis and a successful solo artist, places him alongside Sir Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson as the only artists to sell more than 100 million albums separately as both solo artists and as part of a band.
