news.ninemsn.com.au/world/1026526/peers-taunt-lesbian-over-cancelled-dance QUOTE: Peers 'taunt lesbian' over cancelled dance Constance McMillen wanted to dance with her girlfriend. Mar 14, 2010 A lesbian teenager claims she has been tormented by peers since her high school cancelled its graduation dance because she wanted to bring her girlfriend. Constance McMillen, 18, had demanded she be allowed to bring her girlfriend — also a student — to the end-of-year prom at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Tennessee. The school at first refused her request before announcing it was cancelling the April 2 event due to "recent distractions". The teenager said she reluctantly returned to school this week after deciding that prolonging her return would only make things worse. "My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am," she told The Associated Press. "The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on." But she said some of her classmates now blamed her for the event being cancelled. "Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year'," she said. McMillen said she never expected the college to ditch the event because the school community had invested so much time and effort into making it happen. Her comments come as the American Civil Liberties Union said it would sue the school for cancelling the event. A facebook page set up in support of McMillen has gone from having 2,000 members this morning to more than 40,000. The Associated Press reported that the school now hoped a replacement dance could be held privately. But McMillen said she doubted she would be able to bring her girlfriend even then. "It's a small town in Mississippi, and it's run by an older generation with money — most of them are more conservative," she said.

Is there a giant toilet roll under her skirt? ;D I should think so. These dresses are so much more practical than a stupid old tux... ..which women look ridiculous in anyway.

Ok, so I think we've established that there are, by law, no 'women-only' bars in the Uk, and few in the USA. Yet, Anna has suggested their existence is fair compensation for a lesbian being forbidden from bringing her love to the Prom. Dearest Riotgrrl, There are 2 male leather homosexual bars in Stuttgart that don't allow women in. One has a sign posted on the entrance stating this. I've only heard second hand about stuff like "dark rooms" in these bars and i don't want to know anything more. There is at least one male homosexual sauna club too that obviously excludes females as well! I'd be shocked if the UK would force these bars to allow females in! I really can't imagine a female wanting to go in either! I don't truly see a fair comparison. It's not as if lesbians want to go to their own school prom to gawp at all the heteros there. And it's not as if school proms have rooms in the back for...er lol, whatever they are there for. And those are probably the reasons that a gender might be excluded from gay bars. It's just a school graduation ceremony/party. Any student should be able to go. End of.

Dearest Trubble, The big question is then why should only minorities have the right to exclude others from their social events and interactions. I really don't have a problem with this Lesbian pair going to the prom anymore than i have a problem with guys going into Lesbian bars and social functions. BUT if only minorities have the option of excluding people based on dress codes, sex or sexual orientation then we have a double standard.

But the only lesbian-only bars we've found are in GERMANY, not the USA, and they would be illegal in the UK. Germany also has male-only areas (except for the prostitutes who work in them) where women are not allowed. I doubt there are lesbian-only, men-excluded bars in Miss.

As far as Mississippi Lesbian bars go i don't know.
I believe in giving communities maximum freedom in developping and chosing their way in this world. This Mississippi community should have the same right to self determination as say an Amish community.

of course it does. what's right NEVER changes, regardless of how much you would like it to Again, another completely barking statement. What is right is just a perception, so by essence it changes. It was 'right' for Ancient Romans to take a young boy lover for sex and companionship as marriage was for procreation and politics. Times have changed and that is no longer thought 'right'. WRONG!! what is right is NOT a perception. it is an absolute, and cannot be changed simply because you think it should. your notion that murdering jews in 1939 germany was right simply because it was perceived as right is ridiculous.

not having a rational or legitimate reason for wanting to change tradition makes wanting the change wrong. Do you like wearing trousers? If someone told you that you had to wear a dress would your desire for this not to be the case be 'emotional' and 'irrational'? Still, at least you acknowledge that tradition, in itself, does not confer 'rightness' on anything. That comes from other arguments, if there are any. So what is the argument against allowing women to wear trousers? Or allowing same-sex couples to do the same as opposite-sex ones. Remember, you cannot cite tradition to justify these restrictions. i prefer wearing shorts, but of course, choose not to when it is twenty degrees outside. in the winter, i wear sweats all the time. i don't have to worry about the problem. at 6'8" and 280 pounds, they don't make dresses that would fit me. as close as i can come is that i do carry my ol' lady's purse all the time, since she thinks that she has to have everything she owns in it. sometimes, i do enjoy starting to skip around walmart with it and doing the "hello dear" to people, but that's limited because she gets pissed off and goes ahead and takes it. there's a hell of a good argument against women wearing trousers, but, i don't have a problem with it. god made women's legs for me to ogle, and that's hard when they're covered up. i much prefer a mid thigh skirt. still, it is perfectly fine for a woman to wear pants as far as i'm cocerned. of course, that is totally irrelevant to the subject. this IS about tradition, as well as what is acceptable in polite society.

See, I think the Proms can probably do what they like. It's not my country, who am I to slag it off? I'm just glad that the country I do live in believes in individual freedom and liberty. Must suck to be American, where they don't. say what? you are the CHAMPION of infringing on individual freedom and liberty. ]perhaps you should go check your writing on the gun control thread, just as one example

"Tradition" You sound like the guy in 'Fiddler on the Roof'. Adapt or die. Just because your grandmother went to the prom in a frilly dress, it doesn't give any - ANY - inherit merit in you doing the same.On the contrary, if Jumbo turned up at a prom in a frilly frock he would go up in my estimation. That would give a whole new meaning to the word "balls". sorry. twenty years ago, no problem. actually, the last time i wore a dress was for halloween about forty years ago, when i carried my friend's little brother around. it was funny until one woman came unglued asking if he was hurt. of course, that was funny too, but it spoiled the moment. the next closest is the halloween that i wore only a hand towel and painted myself green as the jolly green giant. i'd run into a bar with my can of peas yelling "ho, ho, ho". we did every bar for fifteen miles, and i never had to buy a beer the whole night. i'm just not as crazy as i once was

But homosexuals don't have the same rights do they - you have made that point yourself. It's like saying before women had the vote they had the same rights as men if they changed into men. Or blacks had the same rights as whites if they changed skin colour. At the prom I doubt very much those without a date would be barred from going or a woman in a trouser suit would have been barred. The ONLY issue here is the school did not want an openly gay couple at the prom. I am unclear why the girl sought permission on what to wear or who to take though, I would have just turned up. But I am like that a girl in a trouser suit WOULD be barred, yes. pants suits are fine for business, shopping, or whatever. however, the prom dress code is FORMAL ball gowns for girls and tuxes for boys. you'd better go back and read hon. i have told you, many times, that homosexuals have EXACTLY the same rights as normal people. that is just a simple reality

Woah easy there tiger. Do not bring Nazis and the atrocities they committed into this debate - it's cheap and not worthy of you. And FYI I have never believed what they did was right and neither did most of the world - which kind of invalidates your point doesn't it.

YOU are the one saying that what is right is ONLY perception. if you want to claim that, you cannot try to claim that you don't believe what someone does who thinks it's right, no matter what it is. right is either absolute, or changes at the whim of anyone's mind. there is no in between
