The Robert De Nero film "Awakenings" is one of the most touching films I've watched. It's the struggle between miracles of salvation and the inevitable course of nature. A very sad story based on true events.

The film "Shawshank Redemption" could easily be listed under "Disturbing Films". A man wrongfully convicted of murder attempts to maintain his humanity in a brutal and corrupt prison system. The film has a moving soundtrack and is very well done. The scenes with brutal prison guards and violent sodomites are disturbing, but unfortunately often a reality in prisons.

Comedy movies are a category that we tend to overlook when listing great movies. I realized that after posting my list earlier in this thread. Some of the most enjoyable (if not the best) movies are comedies. Stand out favorites would include MASH, Animal House, and Legally Blond. Almost all of Eddie Murphy's comedy films are great. On the other hand, I simply can't stand the slapstick comedies like Monty Python (watched several of their movies and never even cracked a smile). The worst of the worst would be the movies made by Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc.). Ditto for anything with Jim Carrey in it. Old films with Jerry Lewis are just as bad. Comedy is so subjective. I understand why some of these don't crack a smile. Some seem very dated. But Monty Python's ''Life of Brian'' is perhaps an exception? And if you don't like the original ''The Producers'', the new one might tickle you? And even if you like neither, do not let that deter you from seeing the show. It's hard to describe the experience of sitting in the audience while the dancers on stage form a swastika with high-kicks - hysterical - it's much better than any film!

Slapstick comedy like Monty Python and Mel Brooks just simply isn't funny. I could watch all of those movies and doubt that I would ever crack a smile much less laugh. They're just simply not funny.
There have been some great comedy movies. Near the top of the list would be Mash and Animal House.

One of my favorite spiritual movies is "Elmer Gantry"! It's an older film, but it addresses a lot of issues that are ignored today! Is the wish or the will to believe enough? Can we bring ourselves to believe to the point that we can believe whatever we want to? And is that the right way to go?
The film is very moving! It's also sad and unsettles some people!
