We saw the new Star Trek movie a couple of weeks ago. It probably won't end up being one of my favorite movies, but it was darned good entertainment - worth the admission price. agree Beth - having watched it now it is a really good romp and nicely done.

One of the greatest films of all time is "Slaughterhouse Five" based on Kurt Vonnegut's novel. A stunning account of a man, who becomes unstuck in time and relives his experiences as a prisoner of war, the present in what seems to be an ordinary, but compromised life and a future where he is imprisoning again on another planet.
A bizarre yet very moving film, which defies description.

I like the part in "Silence of the Lambs" where Jodie Foster plugged that creep full of holes! I generally don't like unrealistic films that try to present themselves as realistic. Real SKs are too uninteresting as people to get Hollywood film rolls!
I like Lord of the Rings! You'd probably like the Narnia films and "Krull" too.

Yes Sadie, Fiddler on the Roof is another great one. I wish Hollywood would remake those musicals like Fiddler, Sound of Music, and My Fair Lady in IMAX. They were great movies in their day and they'd be even greater with modern digital theater technology and a great sound system.
Same for films of sweeping grandeur like Patton, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, and Dr Zhivago.

I have to watch Lawrence of Arabia sometime!
I saw Mary Poppins as a child and was enchanted. You're right good musicals are lacking nowadays.

A superb film. There are some films that are the buzz-films of their year but as time goes by their 'greatness' wears off. Schindler's List is not one of them. I think it may well be a classic. It is a film that deserves more than viewing anyway, and that can stand up to that! Some films - even great ones - can't boast that. The Graduate is another good choice, although I think once is enough, but it's seminal. And My Fair Lady is fabulous. God knows how many times I've seen it. Great music. I've seen a couple of stageshows of it too. Wow, I am shocked. I turn out to be a groupie. I might need an intervention.

This is one of my daughter's favourites. She introduced it to me having watched it in a foreign-film class. It's Spanish, so we watched it with subtitles, and after a few minutes you forget you're reading; beautiful, scary, magical, believable, emotional. I think all of you who listed fantasy films will enjoy it immensely, and those who didn't will like it too. I am not a fantasy fan, and I loved it. It's a must see. Roger Ebert writes:Guillermo del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" is one of the cinema's great fantasies, rich with darkness and wonder. It's a fairy tale of such potency and awesome beauty that it reconnects the adult imagination to the primal thrill and horror of the stories that held us spellbound as children.
If you recall the chills that ran down your spine and the surreal humor that tickled your brain in the presence of "Alice in Wonderland," "Little Red Riding Hood" or "The Wizard of Oz" when you were a child (or, later, in the nightmarish dream-films of Luis Bunuel, Jean Cocteau, F.W. Murnau or David Cronenberg), you'll discover those sensations once again, buried deep in the heart of "Pan's Labyrinth."
As gruesome and brutal as it is enchanting and spellbinding, "Pan's Labyrinth" is a movie intended for adults, not children, as its "R" rating indicates. Some kids under 17 will find it fascinating (especially if they know Spanish or don't mind reading subtitles), but it's a harsh and uncompromising film -- although less gory and violent than many video games.

Comedy movies are a category that we tend to overlook when listing great movies. I realized that after posting my list earlier in this thread. Some of the most enjoyable (if not the best) movies are comedies. Stand out favorites would include MASH, Animal House, and Legally Blond. Almost all of Eddie Murphy's comedy films are great.
On the other hand, I simply can't stand the slapstick comedies like Monty Python (watched several of their movies and never even cracked a smile). The worst of the worst would be the movies made by Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc.). Ditto for anything with Jim Carrey in it. Old films with Jerry Lewis are just as bad.

The film Forrest Gump is one of my favorites too! It's a bit of a comedy, action war film, drama and satire! For me it's a sweet romance story between Forrest, true, loyal and incredibly naive by modern standards and the emotionally shattered Jenny, a victim of child abuse!
This film also supports the argument that the US makes the best films!

A dear friend of mine died rather unexpectedly. Many years ago when we first met i remember we discussed among other things the novel "Flowers for Algernon". I noticed a movie was made based on this book and it can be viewed on YouTube.
