Two Army soldiers from the Ft. Lee Army Base in Petersburg, Va., were charged Saturday in conjunction with the New Year’s Day murder in Elizabeth City of 21-year-old Antoine Tyrone Williams of Winfall.
Shawn Horskins, 22, and Everett Bynum, 19, were arrested early Saturday morning, according to Det. Jerry Boyce of the Elizabeth City Police Department.
“Detective (B.J.) Morgan acquired information from Ft. Lee about where the suspect was and we went to Ft. Lee and interviewed a lot of people until about 3:30 a.m. (Saturday),” Boyce said.
Boyce said the warrant for the arrests was made in Pasquotank County and the suspects were taken into custody at the federal facility in Petersburg.
Horskins was charged with first-degree murder and Bynum with accessory to murder after the fact, Boyce said. Both are being held at the Albemarle District Jail with Horskins being held without bond and Bynum held under a $75,000 bond, he said.
Boyce said that although William’s sister made the call to police, they declined to give her name.
Boyce said the altercation began early Friday morning when Williams and his sister parked their car in a parking lot behind the Elizabeth City Restaurant and Lounge on Charles Street, formerly Trios Restaurant, blocking in Horskin’s four-door Chrysler 300.
“The victim and his sister were together in one car and four guys in another vehicle,” Boyce said. “(Williams) blocked them in and a verbal confrontation ensued.”
The confrontation ended in Horskins firing a handgun at Williams, striking him several times and fatally wounding him, Boyce said. The suspects then fled the scene, he said.
Boyce said there are still several individuals that they need to interview.
“There may be other arrests made in the case pending the results of the investigation and the district attorney’s findings,” he said.
Boyce said that locating the suspects was a joint effort between the ECPD and the federal authorities in Petersburg.
“Our whole unit put a lot of time into this and I’m real proud of what they did,” he said.
