I'll post the answer later! Feel free to take a guess. I would have never gotten this answer right.

I looked the answer up and it is surprising but we will talk about that later after Anna has a few more answers to the question.

Guessing, but a good guess, I think. The Irish? Nope! I heard alchol consumption went down in Ireland and the UK after smoking was outlawed in the pubs and resturants.

That probably would have been my guess too! I speak enough Russian to converse and got invited to a few parties while in Moscow and St. Petersburg and saw frightening examples of heavy, semi-lethal drinking. I foolishly tried to buy a certain type of Vodka in a Russian liquor store for a friend in Germany, who asked for it, and almost got stampeded there. Still the answer Russia appears to be incorrect!

Britain, possibly, per head...with Finland creeping up there perhaps? Finnland is a good guess! The Scandavians love to do binge drinking in Germany where alcohol is less expensive. I suspect the high prices of alcohol in Finnland, etc. keep alcohol consumption checked. The Finns are often toxomanic with alcohol. In the UK as I understand it pubs and taverns must close at 11PM! Most alcoholics like to believe that they're social drinkers, but closing the pubs doesn't let them live that lie out!

On a side note, Finland isn't actually part of Scandinavia, though many think it is. Scandinavia is Denmark, Norway and Sweden. We are part of Fenno-Scandinavia, though Youth binge drinking is creeping up, but not on the levels of Britain yet. Drunks that you might see in the street seem to be middle-aged males. A school of thought suggests this may be down to depressed people who are of the old way of thinking that expressing your feelings is not a male thing - so they bottle it up, get worse, and start drinking I think the drunk travellers here prefer Estonia for cheap booze. It's cheaper and closer

If the question had asked which country has the highest proportion of binge drinking violent thugs who abuse alcohol, we Brits would win by a country mile. But back to the original question, my guess would be the Germans? ?

Which country? I thought the thread was about nationality? A country wouldn't include people born in that country who live elsewhere, and it would also include statistics from other nationalities drinking within it

Read my answer again...but SLOWLY this time. Let it sink in. You will see that I am grammatically correct. The key word is "if". geddit?

My post wasn't solely aimed at you, although you used the "country" word. Have a look at the rest of the posts. My post was also aimed towards another where countries were mentioned rather than a nationality (Britain and Finland - further up) Also, since I didn't find the "Nationality" that drinks the most via google, but I did find the country, I also wonder if maybe anna meant country

Ben, I suspect Moto's question was very relevant. There are plenty of statistics floating around but all the sites I've seen seem to relate to the amount of alcohol bought in a country - and Finland features way down the list.

A country wouldn't include people born in that country who live elsewhere, and it would also include statistics from other nationalities drinking within it I'm sorry if there was anything unclear about the thread heading! I'm asking about the inhabitants of a given nation, citizens and probably legal residents, etc. and in which nation or country do the people consume the highest per person average of alcohol! Immigrants are tough to track and of course bigger more populated nations consume larger quantities of say gasoline, water, etc. etc.. The question is NOT about the total alcohol consumption within a given nation! No more guesses? No white flags waving?

So are we just talking about alcohol consumed per head by citizens of the country, within its borders or when travelling aboad, and excluding tourists and other visitors?
(I asked because after my guess I did do a bit of research and one country with a high per head alcohol consumption seemed to be attributing this to having a lot of visitors!)

(I asked because after my guess I did do a bit of research and one country with a high per head alcohol consumption seemed to be attributing this to having a lot of visitors!) I imagine it's very difficult to get exact figures and whether or not tourists were included or excluded in this study i can't say. The organisation that did the study concluded that the citizens or residents of one particular country ( nation ) consume per person the largest average of alcohol worldwide! To be a little more concrete only a handfull of nations worldwide have an average yearly consumption of over 15 liters of pure alcohol per resident. The US residents consume on average between 6 to 8,9 liters of pure alcohol yearly. The government of the nation that WHO sites as having the highest alcohol consumption per resident disputes the claim that WHO makes so i'm not claiming the results of WHO's research are above question.
