I understand the "religious attachment" that some fans have to their favorite sport and how they're peeved when others show less "reverence"! What are you talking about? No-one is 'peeved' regarding other people's non interest in football. There are people in this Country, millions in fact, that have not the slightest interest in football or the World Cup. The rest of us can enjoy football without them. Really, what difference does it make to the rest of us if the majority does not watch it? Absolutely nothing! Think back to the Superbowl. Outside of the USA, hardly anyone watches it. In the UK for example, the superbowl is on BBC2, which is a minority channel. It is on that Channel because few people are interested in it. Do you think for one second that millions of Americans are a bit 'peeved' that less than half a million British people are even interested in it? I seriously doubt it. I don't think they even would think twice about it. Have you EVER heard an American say, 'gee I wish this game was enjoyed everywhere else'. Or do they just enjoy the sport on their own terms? Throughout the World there are millions of people who enjoy the World cup. Can you think of a reason why I would be interested in the thoughts of people who are not in the slightest bit interested in football? Can you think of a single reason why anyone would be interested in the opinions of a man who thinks the rules of football are messed up because you can't use your hands?

why find another thread if the topic is football surely the antis have as much right to say so as the suporters Of course, but to post 'I am not interested in this subject' seems rather redundant. Then saying 'most of my fellow Americans have no clue about either' seems, well rather odd to me. When most of us see a thread or a post that we have no interest in, we simply ignore them. BA and Anna post huge 'copy, cut and pastes' on a number of subjects which I totally ignore, yet for some reason BA admirer has felt it important to tell us that most Americans could not follow the rules of football, why? One of the biggest cliches in recent World Cup broadcasting is to find Americans and get them to explain what they know about football, with 'predictable' results. They show us people who get mixed up with the boatrace, think Manchester are the favourites cannot follow the rules etc. In other words it is an excuse to show Americans are thick, which is really sad because it is not really relevant. When the NFL comes here this year and they do a vox pop here, I would hope we Brits would make a better stab at it. Okay, I doubt we would get the finer details, but I would at least like to think we could work out and have an educated guess at what a touchdown or an extra point is.

Dearest RV! BushAdmirer is clearly interested in the World Cup since he takes the time to comment here! I did play European football/soccer in the US only because our high school sport teacher was from Scotland! At that time i could only name US sport heros and was appalled that we were encouraged to hit the football/soccer ball with our heads and breasts! On the other hand, living the other half of my life in Germany i do get infected with the enthusiam that the World Cup matches bring! I really have a feeling for both worlds!

So, you must have picked up a few bad habits then, I bet you were unaware of the more skillfull aspects of the game? I assume you were taught the Scottish way of playing football i.e. boot the ball as far up the park and make no attempt to play the ball to other players or even to make space for each other?

Pretty please! Pretty pretty please!
And TRUE! I don't know the difference between Scottish or any other style or strategy of football/soccer!

Americans play football (fake rugby) in full body armour without kicking the ball. Men play the English girls game of rounders with padding and protection. Do they wear helmets to play tiddley-winks?

I think i'd like Rounders! I hope they use protective gloves to catch the ball and not try to catch balls without the glove, like in Cricket! US football reminds me of monster trucks with all that equipment! Kinda cool! Guys with shoulder pads look hulky! The male counterpart to girls stuffing their bras!
Rugby is just flirting with life as a cripple! Of course riding a bucking bronco in a Texas rodeo is foolish too! BTW do they have "touch rugby" for girls, like US football does or is it always tackle!

Hope that helps

No gloves in rounders for little boys or girls

So World Cup talk - anyone have a hot tip/good guess for the winner?
Brazil won today - and are always in the running, but is SA the right climate for them? No one in Europe striking me as great and it's been a bit of a goal famine too - are they all being cautious?
Whaddyathink?

Since you're the author of this thread i respect your right to change the thread title! I personally feel that if you wish to instill enthusiasm or at least some modest interest for football/soccer in the US and other bastions of low interest for football, you'd let these people comment here! Just my opinion!

The last time I checked, the purpose of a discussion board was debate and discussion. If you put up a topic here I think it's an invitation for members to give their opinions. Please let me know if I'm wrong about this.

Brazil.......... 2 : 1 North Korea Côte d’Ivoire 0 : 0 Portugal New Zealand 1 : 1 Slovakia
I think the fact that the North Koreans could score a single goal against Brazil and the Brazilians only scored twice is a VERY bad omen for Brazil! Mighty Portugal couldn't do anything against Côte d'Ivoire and that makes them look bad too! Spain is supposed to have a strong team this year! They play against Switzerland tomorrow/Wednesday!
HEY Germany beat mighty Austrailia 4-0! I actually put a German flag on my car after the win, although i like the Australians too! I think i may be sucumbing to this football/soccer jingoism mania! I'll be diagnosed with a split personality, if the USA and Germany are the 2 finalists! Heaven help me! ___________________________________________________ _________

I love your input here and if June doesn't acquiesce to my humble protest a few posts back i'll put up another thread where you can post anything you want about SOCCER!! ( Yes! I speak American too! ...and YES!! I'll boycott this thread as being anti-free speech, if June doesn't let your voice be heard, without censorship!! )

Well thank you Anna.
It's not just soccer that I don't enjoy watching. I just don't see what the appeal is in soccer. There is a whole lot of running back and forth and hardly any scoring. What was the big deal about the USA tying England? There was no winner. Why would that be good for either team. Soccer is a weird sport.
There are other sports I find just as boring. Hockey has a large following in northern climates. It looks like soccer on ice to me. Boring.
Auto racing is another. Take the Indianapolis 500 which is the biggest auto race in the USA. Every year they go round and round on an oval track for 500 miles. They usually have some crashes and maybe a death or two. Winning has more to do with pit crews and automobile engineering than driving. It is Boring with a capital B.
Despite my lack of enthusiasm for those sports I am a big sports fan. My favorite sports are:
1. NBA Basketball - the players are so athletic and so talented. You can see their talent on the TV 2. Professional Cycling - especially the Tour de France because the TV satellite coverage is now so good. Thes are the best athletes in the world in terms of conditioning and suffering. Winning a major tour is a major achievement. 3. American Professional Football - The NFL only plays 16 games a year (aside from practice games) and there are too many player injuries. But the action is intense and exciting. There is a lot of scoring. The fans are totally involved.

He told me about all the doping back then. I guess with the tests the cyclists have to stay off the testable stuff at least.
I get peeved with basketball when i hear the fans of a certain rapist, who paid his victim off, cheer him on. I like to play basketball though!
Yes! The US side of my family got me interested in Superbowls, etc.. Cute, how my relatives divide themselves up into Packer and Viking fans and the black sheep in our family is a Chicago Bear fan! WHAT A DISGRACE!! I have to be a Packer fan, if i know what's good for me, but being a Vikings fan is a forgivable offense in the non-Minnesota side of our family!
Soccer/European Football enthusiasm can infect you, if you start taking notice of it. I know what you mean about low scoring, but the World Cup match between Germany and Argentina had such an eerie suspense that high scoring basketball fans just don't get!
Every American should have felt indignation when the Italien team did a cheap shot on the US world cup player McBride in 2006! Fortunately the referee noticed it, but unfortunately the Italien team continued their cheap shots in other matches and won the World Cup.
