I struggle to understand prison penpals. it's especially hard to imagine European women latching on to a depraved and brutal American murderer, writing to him, sending him money, and even visiting him at great personal expense. I think marrying him would be the ultimate stupidity (and it actually does happen).
Another aspect of this that I just simply don't understand is why our prisons permit it? Why should a brutal convicted murderer be allowed to correspond with anyone other than his lawyer and his immediate family? I just don't get it.
Some of it is entirely beyond the pale. Scott Peterson is perhaps the best example. He has strange women from around the world writing to him and sending him money all the time.
This is a guy who murdered his wife and unborn child dumping their bodies into San Francisco Bay. And all for a bit of extra curricular sex with a bimbo. Why would a young single European woman want to hook up with this convict and send him money?

From memory (which is a tad faulty) this has been discussed here before.
Someone, and it might have been Lin, suggested that these women lack self confidence, and feel that here is one person to whom they can bring some happiness. It sounded as good a reason as any.
Someone of either sex opposed to capital punishment might well write to a person on death row for quite different reasons.

Why is an answer I don't have for you except in my situation.
I know a woman in her early fifties from England who comes to San Quentin a few times a year to visit a serial killer who has convinced her of his innocence.
Some of the women have self esteem issues, some get off on certain types of murderers and some like the noteriety and a few are just doing what they believe is to be the right thing for them.
I have been told about letters women write to some of these guys asking them to kill them.....these are the sickos that get the attention of the media and make all of us look like a bunch of darn fools.
No matter if you are free or incarcerated, there is always the bottom feeders and we work up from that point.

Good points Cheffie. I'm sure they all have some varied and some crazy reasons. I could also see someone doing it out of curiosity. I guess if you really wanted to know why they did it or what was going on in their minds....who better to ask. Don't know if you could always trust the answer.....but it could be an interesting dabble in psychology.
I really have no idea what prisoners do 24/7......I'm sure the monotony could drive you bonkers......having some type of activity that gives them something to do or think about could be considered helpful to running the prison and make the guards job a little easier.

Visits mean everything to these people; you have no idea how many times I have been thanked by inmates for caring about somebody on death row. It's a different culture there and one I can't explain easily.....but at San Quentin they are locked up in a 4 x 10 cell so unless they are strong minded with a few things to occupy themselves such as tv, radio, cd's or reading material some do lose their minds and become j-cats and that is sad to me that anyone loses their sanity. People forget prison is punishment and justice is being served everyday; it's not a picnic or playground on death row as some would like to think. I could go on and on but will shut up Just wake up everyday and think of how precious your freedom really is; you can go anywhere and do about anything without anyone questioning your motives or restricting your movements
